Many in-ring competitors have transitioned their careers to become commentators in WWE.
An integral part of the presentation of the global juggernaut, WWE, and other promotions is the people calling the action behind the announcer’s desk. While there have been experts and legends who do the job, some rare instances in the last four decades have seen in-ring competitors transition to the commentary booth.
After having stellar careers, superstars would continue to work with WWE as ring commentators to explore a new direction. Here are the top five WWE wrestlers who became commentators.
5. Corey Graves
Corey Graves started in WWE as an in-ring competitor. Despite being a promising talent and even reigning as the NXT tag team champion, his in-ring career was cut short by an injury. This led to Graves successfully transitioning from the ring to the commentary table. Ever since he began as a commentator, Corey Graves has been a part of all WWE shows and currently serves as the play-by-play commentator for SmackDown.
4. Wade Barrett
Wade Barrett made a huge impact by winning the WWE NXT reality show in 2010 and gaining prominence as the leader of The Nexus. This was followed by multiple championships and accolades. However, he left WWE around 2017. Barrett would make his return in 2022, this time as a commentator, beginning his run in NXT and now calling the action alongside Corey Graves on SmackDown.
3. Taz
A legendary name for the squared circle that graced the commentator’s desk during his career was Taz. After making a name for himself with his stints in ECW and WWE, Taz decided to explore a new opportunity around the dawn of the Ruthless Aggression era. He joined the SmackDown announcer’s desk with Michael Cole, and later on, he also had a stint with WWE’s ECW brand. Currently, he is the commentator for WWE’s rival promotion, AEW.
2. Booker T
One of the most popular and successful WWE superstars to become commentators at the end of their in-ring careers is the 6-time World Champion, Booker T. The WWE Hall of Famer began his run as a commentator around the mid-2000s on RAW and SmackDown. Nowadays, he is a mainstay on the commentary desk in WWE’s developmental territory, NXT and has proven to be an integral part of calling the action every Tuesday.
1. Jerry Lawler
The most successful and renowned legend to call the action behind the announcer’s desk after a remarkable run as an in-ring competitor is WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler. Jerry has been known to become a multi-time champion across various promotions and is regarded as one of the greatest in-ring legends of the ring.
He began his stint as a commentator alongside his close friend, Jim Ross, as part of the RAW brand for many years and also worked alongside other talents like Michael Cole and Josh Matthews, being regarded as a legendary name in the list of commentators in WWE.
