Dominik Mysterio retained his title in style
Dominik Mysterio walked into WWE Backlash 2025 with the Intercontinental Championship draped over his shoulder and the weight of The Judgment Day legacy on his back.
By the time he walked out, he had survived an absolute war with Penta El Zero Miedo, a clash that pushed both men to their limits and reminded the fans in St. Louis why the Intercontinental Title continues to be one of the most prestigious prizes in WWE.
From the opening bell, the crowd was electric. Dominik shoved Penta in the face, only to be met with a fiery dropkick. Penta wasn’t wasting any time, launching the champion with a tilt-a-whirl headscissors before catching him flush with a pop-up superkick and a nasty backstabber.
But in true Dominik Mysterio fashion, Dom found his footing by using every trick in the book, launching Penta groin-first onto the top rope and nailing a slingshot senton to slow the momentum.
Mysterio, ever the cocky second-generation star, began mocking Penta while punishing him with stiff strikes and ground-and-pound offense. The crowd jeered, but Dom didn’t care. He was in full control, keeping the masked luchador grounded.
However, Penta doesn’t back down. A stiff kick to the chest and a slick reverse SlingBlade turned the tide. The match hit a fever pitch when Penta nailed a massive flying crossbody to the outside, followed by a somersault plancha that brought the crowd to their feet.
Back in the ring, Mysterio tried to go for the 619, but Penta dodged it with a slick apron enzuigiri. The Mexican star nearly sealed the win with a picture-perfect slingshot crucifix bomb. Just when it looked like Dom was about to fall, he countered with Oblivion for a near-fall. The final sequence was absolute chaos.
After a brutal Mexican Destroyer on the ring apron, Penta looked poised to capture the gold. That’s when The Judgment Day showed up, with Carlito, JD McDonagh and Finn Balor attempting to swing things in Dom’s favor.
But the referee had enough and ejected them all. Just when the coast seemed clear, El Grande Americano appeared out of nowhere, smashing Penta with a loaded headbutt behind the referee’s back.
That opened the door for Mysterio to climb to the top rope and connect with a devastating Frog Splash, securing the controversial win.
Dominik Mysterio may have walked out still Intercontinental Champion, but the victory was anything but clean. One thing’s for sure, this isn’t over.
Winner: Dominik Mysterio retains his Intercontinental Championship
