Two legends meet for ‘One Last Time’
John Cena and Randy Orton headlined WWE Backlash 2025 in a highly anticipated battle for the Undisputed WWE Championship, marking the latest clash in their storied two-decade rivalry. From the opening bell, the tension was palpable, as the two veterans locked up multiple times with neither man able to gain the early advantage.
John Cena offered a handshake early on, attempting mind games, but when Randy Orton finally accepted, Cena poked him in the eye. Not to be outdone, Orton retaliated with an eye poke of his own shortly after. The pace started slow and methodical, with both men trying to outmanoeuvre the other.
John Cena attempted to walk out and take a count-out loss to retain his title, but Orton wasn’t about to let him escape that easily, dragging him back into the ring and unloading with over 20 mounted punches to the delight of the St. Louis crowd.
The match turned physical fast. Orton controlled the tempo with stomps and targeted offense, including a suplex and his patented draping DDT. Cena battled back and locked in the STF, but Orton escaped and landed a DDT. Cena countered an RKO attempt with an Attitude Adjustment, which only got two. Orton rebounded from a shoulder block to hit a surprise RKO, but again, Cena kicked out.
As the bout reached its climax, Cena survived another RKO and attempted a punt kick. Orton dodged, and in the chaos, referee Chad Patton was knocked down. Cena hit another AA, but with no official conscious, the match continued. Orton countered Cena and hit another RKO, only for Cena to kick out when the referee finally returned.
Orton then sent Cena crashing through the announce table with an Attitude Adjustment of his own, before setting up a second table. As he tried to capitalize, Cena recovered and attempted another AA, but Orton reversed and sent the champion crashing through the table.
Back in the ring, Orton hit a third RKO, but the referee was still down. Another official arrived, but it was only good for a near fall. Cena tried to use the championship belt as a weapon, but accidentally struck the referee when Orton ducked. That brought Nick Aldis and officials out to check on the chaos.
Frustrated, Orton hit RKOs on everyone in the ring, including Aldis. When he teased a punt to Cena’s head, R-Truth ran down to stop him, but got caught with an RKO for his troubles. Cena then hit a low blow on Orton, followed by a shot with the championship belt, and finally got the three count to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Winner: John Cena retains the Undisputed WWE Championship
