CM Punk & Gunther

The Second City Saint stepped into the ring and picked up the mic. Punk greeted the Houston crowd and stated that one of his goals since his return had been to win the World Heavyweight title. Punk recapped his victory in the gauntlet match last week, which set him up for a title shot against Gunther.
He lauded Gunther before promising to leave it all in the ring at SummerSlam. Punk continued to name Gunther’s accomplishments and dominant title reigns, stating that, while he only had two weeks to prepare, he was CM Punk and was ready for the challenge.
The Second City Saint then said that he wasn’t just anyone; he was the “BEST IN THE WORLD.” Just then came Gunther. The Ring General stepped into the ring and came face to face with Punk before taking a step back and picking up the mic.
Gunther stated that he hadn’t come out to cause any drama and pointed out that they both considered themselves “Best in the World” and both had massive egos, but unlike Punk, his ego was based on results, while Punk’s was just because of the fans.
The Ring General stated that when the bell rang at SummerSlam, he would make Punk regret it and that he would choke him out. Gunther continued, pointing out that Punk would never be the Champion, the Best in the World.
Grade: B
Key Takeaways:
- CM Punk last held the WWE World title in 2013.
- Gunther delivered a good promo, staying true to his character and proving again that he is one of the most underrated stars on the mic.

Naomi then said that after she won the triple threat match at SummerSlam, it would be her against Vaquer at Clash in Paris. Stephanie interjected, but Naomi, now irked, began berating her, reminding her how she had been mangled by Iyo Sky. The champion then left, stating that she would see Vaquer in Paris.
Rusev vs Sheamus
As announced, the two former friends met once again as Sheamus looked to register a win against Rusev. Both men once again delivered an amazing match, writing another chapter in their feud.
Rusev once again exposed the turnbuckle and tried to capitalize but it was Sheamus who capitalized this time, landing the brogue kick in the end, picking up the win, thwarting Rusev from using the shillelagh.

Backstage
Iyo Sky was with the Kabuki Warriors (Asuka & Kairi Sane) as she declared that the Kabuki Warriors would soon be the Women’s Tag Team Champions, while Sane added that Sky would be the World Champion again. Asuka and Sane left, and Stephanie Vaquer walked in, stating that if it was to be her versus Sky at Clash in Paris, then that would give them some clarity.
Sky, remembering their previous encounter, said that as far as she recalled, she had already beaten Vaquer. Vaquer, unfazed, responded that they didn’t have to wait until Paris to find out. Sky agreed, then suggested the idea of a clash between the two that very night. Vaquer accepted, and the crowd erupted in excitement.
TNA World Champion Trick Williams also appeared during a backstage segment, hyping up his segment with the Undertaker on this week’s episode of WWE NXT.
Adam Pearce spoke to Dominik Mysterio and told him to quit stalling. Mysterio said he wasn’t cleared yet, but Pearce said he should be and should be facing AJ Styles. Dom turned around and saw AJ Styles dressed as a janitor. Dom begged off, saying he still wasn’t cleared, but Styles told him to go get cleared and then started mopping, running into New Day.
New Day freaked out, saying everything was going wrong, the simulation was broken, and they needed an edge. Grayson Waller came up and said Austin Theory was hurt, A-Town Down Under was finished, and he was now their ace in the hole. They were skeptical, but he went to get the car anyway.
Becky Lynch – Lyra Valkyria
The Women’s Intercontinental Champion stepped in, stating that she could have been in New York promoting her film, but instead, she had to be here in Houston because leaders make sacrifices. Lynch recapped her “slick” victory at Evolution before going off on Lyra Valkyria, who had accused her of being a thief of opportunity.
Becky pointed out that Lyra was now being one herself, considering she was set to battle for the Women’s Tag Team Titles. Lynch called out Lyra, who obliged and made her way toward the ring. Once inside, Lynch declared that their trilogy would end at SummerSlam, adding that if Lyra lost, she would never challenge for the title again.
Lyra fired back, accepting the terms and insisting there would be no countouts or disqualifications; there must be a winner. Becky agreed to the stipulation, and Lyra said she would see her at SummerSlam. Lynch then emphasized that it would be the most important match for the Women’s IC Title and that Lyra should respect both the match and her.
Becky extended her hand for a shake, but as Lyra went to reciprocate, Becky tried to land a cheap shot. However, Lyra was ready, countering with the Manhandle Slam that sent the Champion crashing to the mat.
Grade: C
Key Takeaways:
- While the build-up for the match isn’t very intriguing, the SummerSlam match between the two will be an absolute banger.
- Both women have agreed to no countouts or disqualifications in the match and if Lyra losses, she can never challenge Becky for the Women’s Intercontinental title.
Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez (c) vs Bayley & Lyra Valkyria – Women’s Tag Team title match
Ahead of their scheduled tag title defense, Women’s Tag Team Champions Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez defended the title against the team of Bayley and Lyra Valkyria.
This was Bayley’s attempt to redo what she and Lyra were unable to do at WrestleMania due to Lynch attacking the former and forcing her out of the match at the biggest stage. Lyra and Bayley slowly gained momentum, but chaos broke out when Dominik Mysterio tried to interfere.
Lyra confronted Dominik as Raquel came in with a big boot, but Lyra moved out of harm’s way, causing Rodirguez to take out Mysterio instead. This led to the doctor rushing in to check on Mysterio, and the doctor turned out to be AJ Styles.
Mysterio ran away as Styles chased him, Becky Lynch then came out, driving Lyra off the apron and into the steel steps. Bayley was all alone in the ring and tried to fight back, but Rodriguez picked up the win after delivering the tahana bomb.

- Backstage, Dominik searched for AJ Styles as Finn Balor and JD McDonagh tried to calm him down, assuring him he was safe. GM Adam Pearce arrived and warned Dom he’d strip him of the title unless he went to the doctor’s room for evaluation immediately. Dom reluctantly left, and Balor asked him to grab some lollipops from the office.
Sami Zayn vs Karrion Kross
Despite his injuries, Sami Zayn made his return to battle Karrion Kross in the rematch. Sami was looking to put an end to this feud and re focus on his title hopes. Kross targeted Zayn’s injured ribs but in Zayn stayed true to his persona and refused to give up.
However, in the final moments of the match, Scarlett brought out the steel pipe from ringside and tried to hand the baton to Kross. Sami came in to attack as Scarlett hid it. Zayn delivered an exploder on the ropes. Scarlett managed to hand Kross the baton as Sami was hyping up the crowd.
Sami went for the Helluva Kick, but Scarlett held his leg. The referee went to warn Scarlett, and Kross attacked Sami with the steel baton while he was going for the Helluva Kick.

Backstage

Styles, growing impatient, was blindsided by Dominik, who came in from behind and took Styles down with a brutal elbow. Mysterio then declared that he had been cleared and would see Styles at SummerSlam. Afterward, Mysterio left, and Pearce called in medical personnel.
Stephanie Vaquer vs Iyo Sky
Stephanie Vaquer and Iyo Sky clashed in an impromptu singles match in the main event of the show. Both women once again tried to one-up each other, delivering submission and thundering blows. However, the match ended unceremoniously as Secret Hervice (Piper Niven & Alba Fyre) came out.
Meanwhile, Chelsea Green appeared in the ring, attacking Vaquer and causing the disqualification. Niven and Piper joined in as Sky fought back with a drop kick and joined Vaquer in taking them out. Naomi then came out, attacking Iyo and sending Vaquer outside as Niven and Fyre attacked her.
This sequence brought Rhea Ripley out with another massive pop, Ripley came in taking down Niven and Fyre, before stepping in the ring to take out Naomi with a slam and Green with the riptide. Sky, Vaquer and Ripley stood tall in the end.
Winner: Stephanie Vaquer via DQ
Grade: B+
Key Takeaways:
- The match was very good but failed to reach the heights of their first clash. Nonetheless, their chemistry and excellence were unmistakably on display.
- WWE should book a six-woman tag match, pitting Rhea, Iyo and Vaquer against Green and her Secret Hervice.
Roman Reigns addresses Paul Heyman
Paul Heyman, along with Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker, made the walk to the ring. The three men stood in the ring as Heyman picked up the mic, hyping up Breakker and Reed, calling them the future of the industry.
Heyman stated that before ‘he’ came out, he had a lot of things to get off his chest, but the OTC’s music hit. Roman Reigns appeared, and the crowd acknowledged their Tribal Chief. The OTC stepped into the ring, and Heyman and Reed tried to calm down Breakker. Reigns came face to face with the three.
Heyman started by saying he never wanted to be disrespectful, but the crowd drowned him out with boos. He got irked, and the “A**HOLE” chants began. Heyman tried again, saying he never wanted to be rude or disrespectful, then took a jab at Texas, which caused even more boos from the crowd.
Heyman claimed that Seth Rollins would be out of action for a long time, leaving a leadership void that they could fill. He pointed out what he brought to the table, saying they were better together than opposing each other.
He professed his love for his Tribal Chief as Roman grabbed the mic and asked Heyman to put it on pause before asking the Houston crowd to acknowledge him. Reigns stated that if Heyman wanted him to lead, he might have agreed a few years ago, but now, he wasn’t a wise man anymore, “just a dumbass”. Breakker went off, but Heyman and Reed managed to calm him down.
Roman continued, saying that Heyman would do the same to Breakker as he did to him, taking all the credit for their success. Reigns pointed out that it wasn’t Heyman who made him the Tribal Chief, it was the fans who still acknowledged him.
Reigns reminded everyone that he was the greatest Champion to ever step foot in the ring, and while Heyman had a part in his success, he didn’t have any part in him keeping the title. That credit went to the Usos, Solo Sikoa, and even Sami Zayn.
Reigns explained that while he lost the title, he went away to raise the upcoming Bloodline. Roman stated that while Heyman could create a faction, he couldn’t create another Bloodline, because it was God’s work.
Reigns asked Bron to step back as he continued, saying that Heyman used to be a friend of his family, but Heyman threw it all away for a best friend. Reigns stated that he didn’t ruin the Bloodline, this dumbass (Heyman) did. Breakker stepped forward, coming face to face with Reigns.
Heyman handed Breakker the mic, and Breakker asked Roman to look around, saying they didn’t want him here. He called Roman the “Old Dog” who was taking up space in his ring. Bron then stated that he knew Paul wouldn’t stab him in the back because he held value in this place, while Roman was worthless, he was the “Big Dog”, the “Top Dog”, the man around here now.
Breakker told Roman to do what he does best, turn around and leave. Reigns took two steps back and grabbed the ropes, pretending he didn’t hear Breakker’s challenge. Roman then threw the mic at Breakker, who caught it, but Reigns took him out with a Superman Punch. Reed tried to attack with the briefcase, but Reigns ducked and took him down.
Breakker charged with a spear, and both men began battering Reigns. Reed lined him up for a Tsunami, but that’s when Jey Uso made his entrance to make the save.
Jey took out Breakker with a superkick, and Reed met the same fate. Reigns and Jey then hit a double spear on both men to end the chaos. Jey helped Roman back to his feet, and the two stood tall as Reed and Breakker retreated, closing the show.
Grade: B+

- WWE is likely planning the team team clash pitting Reigns and Jey against Breakker and Reed for SummerSlam, as reports suggested.
