The vintage show is set to return to WWE after almost 16 years and has a rich history of its own.
WWE is resurrecting their highly popular vintage show from the 1990s, Saturday Night’s Main Event. The show is set to take place on December 14 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New York. The company will take over the Big Apple with a stacked match card and a line-up of top-tier WWE stars.
With WWE using nostalgia and the rich history of the show to their maximum leverage, the show is bound to be a blockbuster. Here is a look back at the seven greatest moments from WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event:
7. Mixed tag team action
The October edition of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in 2007 featured a highly entertaining, orthodox and short-duration tag match between Finlay and Hornswoggle against The Boogeyman and Little Boogeyman. The nearly four-minute mixed tag team bout featuring regular and midget-size wrestlers was a sight to remember and saw Finlay and Hornswoggle outlast the Boogeymen.
6. Uncle Elmer’s marriage
Stanley Fraizer became a huge name in the Memphis territory and gained success under various gimmicks throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His success led him to arrive in WWE under the ring name ‘Uncle Elmer.’ He became a part of Hillbilly Jim’s faction ‘The Hilbillies’, and at the October 1985 edition of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, he married Joyce Stako in the ring in a legitimate wedding that lasted until his death in 1992.
5. Mr Perfect destroys the WWE title
Mr Perfect’s obsession with getting a WWE title shot against Hulk Hogan led to an iconic moment at the 1989 WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. During Hogan’s match with a wrestler named The Genius Lanny Poffo, Curt Hennig took down The Hulkster with his own championship. Later on, he was seen smashing the WWE title backstage, owing to the fact that Hogan did not deserve the title he called ‘Perfect.’
4. The Brain Busters become new champs
Four Horse Men members, Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson, came to WWE as the tag team, The Brain Busters, after making their mark in outside promotions. They set their sights on the WWE tag team titles and got an opportunity against the dominant tag team, Demolition, at the July 1989 WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. The duo had a hard-fought battle against Demolition and defeated them to end the longest-reigning title reign of the time, which stood for nearly 500 days.
3. Shortest match in history
In the history of multiple WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, the shortest match took place at the July 2008 show. The match saw The Great Khali squash the much shorter Jimmy Wang Yang in 1:30 to score the victory and etch their name in the history of the vintage show.
2. Non PPV cage match
During the 1987 edition of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, WWE featured the first-ever non-pay-per-view Steel Cage between the poster boy, Hulk Hogan and Mr Wonderful Paul Orndorff. The moment itself was big to have the match on the show that saw Hogan exit the cage and win the bout after it was restarted earlier.
1. The formation of Mega Powers
At the 12th edition of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, the WWE Universe saw two of the biggest stars at the time forming a dominant alliance. Hulk Hogan came to the aid of Macho Man Randy Savage as The Hart Foundation outnumbered him.
This was after his match against The Honky Tonk Man for the Intercontinental title that Hogan and Savage united to take down The Hart cohorts and made their alliance official, named ‘The Mega Powers.’ They would go on to make several appearances, but their team was short-lived as Hogan and Savage resumed their bitter rivalry.
