John Cena has now officially retired from WWE!

WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event closed with history, heartbreak, and harsh reality as John Cena wrestled the final match of his legendary career against Gunther. What unfolded was not nostalgia alone, but a violent, emotional reminder of why both men defined their eras in very different ways.

Before the bell even rang, the night belonged to Cena. Video packages rolled with peers and coworkers praising him, followed by a montage of social media posts from sports teams whose jerseys Cena carried to the ring over the years. Celebrities from outside wrestling added their voices, underscoring his cultural impact.

The Miz, R-Truth and Joe Hendry with some comedy before the match

Back at the Okerlund Position, Stephanie McMahon and Joe Tessitore briefly reset the broadcast before chaos erupted. The Miz stormed the ring in his WrestleMania 37 gear, furious about being “a main character in the history of John Cena” yet left off the card.

Ron “the Truth” Killings interrupted, referencing “the inappropriate thing Miz did with Nick Aldis’ balls” and producing the ball that “should have been pulled.” Miz opened it, only for JOE HENDRY TO APPEAR SNAP ZOOM TURN SMILE IN THE ROPES! Hendry and Truth flattened Miz with a fallaway slam, kip-up, stereo “You can’t see me!”, Five Knuckle Shuffles, and Standing Ovation, with Truth cheekily counting the pin. Attendance was announced as a sellout of 19,232.

A final retrospective video package aired, blending present-day backstage footage with iconic moments from Cena’s career. Then, it was time.

John Cena’s last stand against the Ring General

Cena and Gunther began with tense lockups, stalemates, and simmering hostility. As “A**h*le!” chants rained down, Gunther snapped, stomping Cena and unleashing savage chops to “F*ck you, GUNTHER!” chants. Cena rallied with shoulder blocks, a Blue Thunder Driver, “You can’t see me!”, and the Five Knuckle Shuffle.

Gunther answered with German suplexes, lariats, and the first application of the Gojira Clutch. Cena survived, countering into the STF, only for Gunther to escape. The violence escalated, Gunther powerbombed Cena, taunted the crowd, and set him on the steel steps.

Then came the defining image: ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT OFF THE STEEL STEPS AND THROUGH THE ANNOUNCE DESK. Cena wasn’t done. Inside the ring, he hit a KENTA KOBASHI LEG DROP, held up a finger, and begged the crowd to give him one more thunderous “YOU CAN’T SEE ME!”

Even an Avalanche Attitude Adjustment couldn’t keep Gunther down. They traded bombs, powerbombs, a 747 splash, uppercuts, until Gunther relentlessly returned to the Gojira Clutch. “Don’t give up!” chants echoed as referee Chad Patton checked Cena’s arm.

Finally, after hammer-and-anvil elbows and one last squeeze of the Gojira Clutch, Cena tapped. Gunther did exactly what he promised. Gunther defeated John Cena by submission, ending an era with ruthless finality.
