SummerSlam is WWE’s second-largest premium live event each year, and the 2024 edition in Cleveland is building up to be a watershed moment in several of the company’s primary storylines.
SummerSlam has the potential to be a spectacular event, with the ongoing intrigue involving The Bloodline and the prospective return of Roman Reigns or The Rock, as well as the love triangle surrounding Liv Morgan’s challenge for the Women’s World Championship against Rhea Ripley.
Here is the match card, news, rumors, predictions, timings and telecast details of WWE SummerSlam 2024.
WWE SummerSlam 2024 match card
- World Heavyweight Championship: Damian Priest (c) vs Gunther
- WWE Women’s Championship: Bayley (c) vs Nia Jax
- Women’s World Championship: Liv Morgan (c) vs Rhea Ripley
- Undisputed WWE Championship: Cody Rhodes (c) vs Solo Sikoa
- WWE United States Championship: Logan Paul (c) vs LA Knight
- WWE Intercontinental Championship: Sami Zayn (c) vs Bron Breakker
- CM Punk vs Drew McIntyre with Seth Rollins as guest referee
CM Punk vs Drew McIntyre with Seth Rollins as guest referee
The most anticipated SummerSlam bout is undoubtedly one without a title on the line. WWE has expertly depicted the narrative of Punk and McIntyre. The Scotsman constantly criticized Punk’s proclivity for injuries after the latter was injured in the ring with him during the Royal Rumble.
Punk responded by sabotaging McIntyre’s WrestleMania moment, Scotland homecoming, and Money in the Bank cash-in. McIntyre hospitalized Punk with a vicious attack in Chicago between Clash at the Castle and Money in the Bank, adding to their epic clash in Cleveland.
People were curious how Seth Rollins’ long-standing grievances with each guy would factor into the bout. Rollins will be the special guest referee for Punk vs McIntyre.
World Heavyweight Championship: Damian Priest (c) vs Gunther
Gunther beat Randy Orton in the King of the Ring tournament finals, securing a world championship chance at SummerSlam. Priest has had a terrific run as world champion, but he has yet to stand on his own two feet.
Priest beat McIntyre in WrestleMania 40, Clash at the Castle, and Money in the Bank, but needed help from Punk each time. Many people expect Gunther, the record-breaking former intercontinental champion, to win the World championship at SummerSlam.
WWE Women’s Championship: Bayley (c) vs Nia Jax
Jax overcame darkhorse finalist Lyra Valkyria to become Queen of the Ring. Jax hasn’t been a major presence on SmackDown in a while, but her new alliance with Tiffany Stratton might give her an advantage as she will be battling champion Bayley.
Women’s World Championship: Liv Morgan (c) vs Rhea Ripley
“Mami” has returned home, and Morgan has a serious problem. Morgan’s injured revenge tour was accidentally real. Rhea Ripley was wounded during a backstage confrontation with Morgan, which was based on Morgan’s legitimate injuries from a prior fight with Ripley.
Morgan eventually defeated Becky Lynch to win the women’s world title, with help from Dominik Mysterio. After pursuing Mysterio for weeks and assisting him in defeating his estranged father, Rey Mysterio, Morgan placed a kiss on Dominik, just as Ripley returned seconds later. The rivals will face off at SummerSlam, with the women’s world title at stake.
WWE Intercontinental Championship: Sami Zayn (c) vs Bron Breakker
Bron Breakker’s response to losing his first attempt to become Intercontinental Champion was to concede he had no right to a rematch. Then he did what he’s been doing since joining the main roster: trashed shop.
This resulted in him being booked into a number one contender match against Ilja Dragunov on this week’s Monday Night Raw in Green Bay, with the winner promised a shot at Sami Zayn at the upcoming SummerSlam premium live event on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
The match was excellent, with a finale that placed Breakker up significantly. He was on the outside late and came off the apron directly into Bron’s massive spear. The referee checked on him and called the match off, resulting in Breakker’s victory.
WWE United States Championship: Logan Paul (c) vs LA Knight
There is no way WWE would exclude Paul from a PPV event in his hometown. LA Knight is the most likely contender for Paul’s US crown. Knight has been stalking Paul for months, breaking into his mansion to use his swimming pool, and pinning him in a Money in the Bank qualification battle.
On the July 19 edition of SmackDown, Knight persuaded Paul to sign a contract to defend his championship at SummerSlam. Knight appears to be on track to win his first main roster title while also elevating the U.S. championship.
Undisputed WWE Championship: Cody Rhodes (c) vs Solo Sikoa
Cody Rhodes finished Roman Reigns’ domination at WrestleMania, but he’s not finished with The Bloodline. With the acquisition of Jacob Fatu, the Sikoa-led faction saw a significant improvement.
The Bloodline beat Rhodes, Orton, and Kevin Owens in a six-man tag team match at Money in the Bank, giving Sikoa a strong case to fight Rhodes for the undisputed championship at SummerSlam.
Rhodes indicated a desire to defend his championship against Sikoa at SummerSlam, and WWE’s website subsequently announced that the match was confirmed.
