Some top matches are announced for Backlash 2025
WrestleMania 41 is now in the rearview mirror, and WWE has wasted no time keeping the momentum going with three action-packed main roster shows since the grand spectacle. The landscape has already shifted in dramatic fashion.
Seth Rollins has aligned himself with Bron Breakker and Paul Heyman to form a powerful new faction, while John Cena has kicked off his latest title reign in classic fashion. With the Undisputed WWE Championship set to be defended at Backlash in St. Louis, the stakes are high.
However, despite the event’s significance, not every top name is expected to appear. Here’s a look at three major superstars who are likely to sit this one out.
3. Cody Rhodes
Cody Rhodes has been absent from WWE TV since WrestleMania 41 despite being advertised for SmackDown after the show. The American Nightmare lost his Undisputed WWE Championship to John Cena in the main event.
Cody is enjoying his time away from WWE and he looks set to miss Backlash. WWE doesn’t really need him during the storyline between Cena and Randy Orton. He can return on SmackDown after Backlash to challenge the winner of the main event.
2. CM Punk
CM Punk, like Reigns, appeared on Raw after WrestleMania, but he was attacked by Rollins. Punk did not appear on this week’s show, and he is unlikely to return before Backlash.
He could return after Backlash and face Bron Breakker, or he could decide to challenge Cena for the championship.
1. Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns has been on a part-time stint with WWE since 2022, so his absence is unsurprising. Reigns’ appearance on Raw after WrestleMania 41 came out of nowhere, and he is now taking a vacation from WWE.
He may return on the way to Money in the Bank, where he could link up with CM Punk to face Seth Rollins’ side. Reigns now appears in very few matches because he has a part-time deal. He took an extended vacation after WrestleMania 40 and only returned at SummerSlam.
