The 16-time World Champion tuned heel at Elimination Chamber 2025
John Cena turning heel at WWE Elimination Chamber 2025 will go down as one of the biggest shocks in modern WWE history and now, Triple H is pulling back the curtain on how it all went down behind the scenes.
Speaking with Peter Rosenberg on WWE’s YouTube channel, The Game revealed just how tight the lid was on this monumental turn and get this, only three people on the executive team knew beforehand.
“We kept that so quiet that on our side, three people on the exec team knew. That’s it,” Triple H said. “Me and two others. Nobody else knew.”
The secrecy didn’t stop there. According to Triple H, John Cena himself didn’t even tell his wife or his manager. Talk about commitment to the craft.
“Cena knew. Cena didn’t even tell his wife. Cena didn’t even tell his manager,” he added.
Other key players involved were also sworn to secrecy. Even Travis Scott, who had a part in the segment, was just going along for the ride.
“Cody knew, Cody told no one, right. Obviously Rock knew,” Triple H confirmed. “Travis sort of knew but he was just f***ing going along, just being along for the ride.
Doing exactly what they told him to do which is at some point slap Cody and he was slapping him whether Cena wanted it or not, cause Cena didn’t know about that part.”
But the real magic? That came during the final moments of the match, when Triple H had to orchestrate the mayhem in real-time without giving too much away.
“When we get to the end of the show, I have to tell everyone as we’re coming in to that last minute of Elimination Chamber, ‘Okay, there’s aftermath on this show. Everybody lay out, I’m directing traffic, I will call all of this,” he recalled.
“I rattle off all this sh*t to Marty, kind like shot for shot… Marty is like, ‘Holy sh*t.’ I’m like, ‘I will walk you through it’ because I’m still not saying on headset, and then John is going to turn on Cody. I’m leaving out details.”
The result? A jaw-dropping moment that nobody saw coming except a very select few. Triple H masterfully blended kayfabe with backstage wizardry to create one of the most talked-about swerves in WWE history. And with Cena now embracing the dark side for the first time in 20 years, the WWE Universe is buckled in for an unpredictable ride.
John Cena now will face Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 41
Cena is pursuing his 17th World Title, which would establish a new record, a distinction he presently shares with Ric Flair, a 16-time World Champion. But ‘The American Nightmare’, who is now in the midst of his spectacular first reign as Undisputed WWE Champion, stands in his way.
These two superstars had already battled about a decade ago. Can Cena win his 17th World Championship now that he has accepted the dark side, or will Rhodes keep his title?
