The promotion wants nothing to do with an Unsanctioned match

While there are multiple match types in WWE that fans are familiar with, an unsanctioned match type is a very unique and rarely used match type. On a first look, things look similar to regular matches as it is held in the same ring with an official and pinfall is the way to win.

However, if you look closely, there’s one thing different, the Stamford-based promotion wants nothing to do with this match, which means whatever happens they are not responsible. Such bouts are frequently made official when stars desire to rip one another apart, and WWE is concerned about how things will play out.

When did the last Unsanctioned Match take place in WWE?

The last time an unsanctioned match took place in the promotion was during the NXT: Stand & Deliver 2023 PLE when Johnny Gargano battled with Grayson Waller. The two stars battled at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on April 01, 2023.

Gargano emerged victorious in the brutal clash which saw both stars put each other through tables, chairs, trash cans and a kendo stick.

Every Unsanctioned match in WWE history

The latest addition to the list will obviously be the unsanctioned match against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn at the Elimination Chamber PLE on March 1 at the Rogers Center, Toronto.

  • Shawn Michaels vs Triple H – SummerSlam 2002
  • Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho – Unforgiven 2008
  • Randy Orton vs Shane McMahon – Monday Night Raw, February 16th 2009
  • Triple H vs Seth Rollins – WrestleMania 33
  • Johnny Gargano vs Tommaso Ciampa – NXT TakeOver: New Orleans 2018
  • Drake Maverick vs Mike Kanellis – 205 Live, July 30th, 2019
  • Randy Orton vs The Big Show – Monday Night Raw, July 20th, 2020
  • Adam Cole vs Kyle O’Reilly – NXT Stand & Deliver 2021
  • Johnny Gargano vs Grayson Waller – NXT Stand & Deliver 2023

One thing that stands out when looking at this list is the trend of former best friends facing off in an Unsanctioned Match. Whether it’s Michaels and Triple H, Gargano and Ciampa, or Cole and O’Reilly, there’s a good chance that if you were once close with someone, you’ll eventually find yourself battling them in this brutal stipulation.

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn are the latest addition to the list and the two former friends will battle it out in this vicious stipulation on Saturday.
