November 2024 marks a decade of The New Day in the WWE
Since their debut on July 21, 2014, The New Day faction which consists of Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E has made their impact on the wrestling world. However, Big E has been sidelined since 2022 due to a neck injury.
The New Day boasts a massive following, particularly among younger fans. However, a noticeable rift has developed between Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston, sparking public arguments and tension.
Despite their recent issues, the team holds multiple records in their ten-year run till now, which includes seven reigns as SmackDown Tag Team Champions, the most in the promotion’s history.
The faction also has a record-setting 483-day run as Raw Tag Team Champions to their name. With a combined total of 12 WWE-branded tag team title reigns (seven on SmackDown, four on Raw, and one on NXT), they are second only to WWE legends, The Dudley Boyz, who have had 18 title reigns.
Xavier Woods addresses tensions within the New Day faction
In a recent conversation with TV Insider, Woods spilled some beans on the upcoming celebration planned by the WWE on the tenth anniversary of the faction.
Woods also commented on the ongoing tensions between him and Kingston during the conversation. Woods further pointed out that the celebration is about having fun.
“We did film a bunch of stuff going through our historical things the past 10 years. It’s going to be a party. It’s going to be a huge party on Raw because that’s what we have done at WWE. Lots of people have forgotten wrestling is supposed to be fun. That’s why we came into the picture to remind everyone.
Yes, you can be so angry or sad and feel these emotions from the show. At the same time, don’t forget the most important one: You’re supposed to be having fun. That’s what the celebration will be. It’s going to be a good time and a reminder that wrestling is supposed to be fun.” Woods said.
The New Day faction is currently set to face the Alpha Academy (Akira Tozawa & Otis) on next week’s episode of Monday Night Raw. The idea of the match was floated by Woods on this week’s episode after a backstage segment involving the two factions.
At the end of the segment, Woods challenged Alpha Academy to a tag match next week and stated that a win against these “jokers” would put their team back in title contention.
