Some of these stars are considered true legends of the game.

The much-awaited Australian Open 2022 is going to be played between January 17-30 in Melbourne Park, Australia. Although the tournament started in 1905, it was only after 19 years that the International Field Tennis Federation (ILTF) honored it as a major event. The Australian Open has been hosted in seven different metropolises over the span of 105 editions of the competition. Melbourne has been hosting the event since 1972.

Even till today, the Australian Open has the loftiest attendance numbers among all Grand Slam events. The 2020 edition of the competition drew in a record 81,2174 spectators from all around the globe. On that note, let's take a look at the top five men's singles players with the most Australian Open titles.

5. Mats Wilander (3)

Between 1983-1985, Wilander made three successive victories to the tournament finals. He is one of only three players to mark this accomplishment. When he defeated Lendl routinely in the finals, he became the second-youngest Australian Open champion in history after Ken Rosewall.

In 1984, Wilander defeated South African Kevin Curren to win the Open title. In 1988, Wilander won his third Australian and French Opens.

4. Ken Rosewall (4)

In 1953, at age 18, he won his first major title in the pre-Open Era. Two years later, he won his second Australian Open singles title. In 1956, Rosewall and Lew Hoad, took the Davis Cup from the United States. In the 1971 Australian Open, at the age of 36, he became the first singles player during the Open Era to win a Grand Slam event without dropping a set.

Rosewall trumped the feat by winning the Australian Open again in 1972, losing just two sets on his way to the title that year. He won his alternate Australian Open title at the age of 37 years. The Australian remains the oldest player to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era till date.

3. Andre Agassi (4)

Andre Kirk Agassi was the first man to win four Australian Open singles titles in the Open Era. Novak Djokovic later surpassed this record by winning his fifth title in 2015. The Australian Open proved to be his most successful feat. In it, Agassi won 2000, 2001, and 2003 events, knocking off Russia, French, and Germany independently.

Agassi won his fourth Australian Open title at the age of 33. His game at the tournament combined with a 79-19 record at the US Open, earned him a 127-career hardcourt major success. It is the second-most in history, and a 127-24 record, seventh-best of all time.

2. Roger Federer (6)

Federer has won four Australian Open titles, the second-most of all-time. When he won his most recent Australia Open in 2010, it completed a run in which he'd reached at least the semifinals of 23 straight Grand Slam events. He won 15 of the 23.

Roger Federer won the 2007 Australian Open without losing a single set in his seven matches. He rebounded from his loss to Nadal in 2009 by winning his fourth title in 2010. He defeated Andy Murray in straight sets in the singles. Federer is also the first singles player to win more than 14 grand slams.

1. Novak Djokovic (9)

The Serbian superstar has won an all-time record of nine Australian Open men's singles titles. He surpassed the former record of six by Roy Emerson. He's the only singles player to win three successive titles during the Open Era. However, his participation this year has been under the radar due to the recent controversies.

Novak Djokovic is the second of only two singles players in history to win a Grand Slam singles title more than nine times. The other player to do so is Rafael Nadal (13 French Opens). The 34- time-old Serbian has also won 20 grand slam singles titles. This achievement is shared along with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
