Former WWE star Matt Cardona in talks with AEW: Reports

“The Indy God” was attacked by Chris Jericho recently
Former WWE superstar Matt Cardona aka Zack Ryder is reportedly in discussions to join All Elite Wrestling (AEW). According to a report from Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, Cardona may be on the verge of finding a permanent home with AEW.
Meltzer stated: “I know that there was at least talk of Cardona getting an AEW contract. I don’t know if it’s gonna happen or not [or] if he’s already agreed. I guess we’ll find out, obviously, if he beats Jericho. Which I don’t expect to happen but if he does, obviously, they won’t do it unless he’s under contract.”
Cardona is currently embroiled in a feud with Chris Jericho over the Ring of Honor (ROH) World Championship, which has further fueled speculation about his potential future in AEW.
Since his WWE release in 2020, Cardona has undergone a remarkable transformation. Shedding the comedic Zack Ryder moniker into an embraced edgier monikers like “The Indy God” and “The King of the Deathmatch,” earning respect for his ability to reinvent himself.
Cardona has amassed an impressive resume, winning numerous championships across promotions like GCW, Impact Wrestling and NWA where he has also cultivated a loyal fanbase.
The former Intercontinental and United States Champion gained attention for his pioneering use of social media, particularly his YouTube series Z! True Long Island Story, which helped him connect with fans on a deeper level during his WWE tenure.
Despite becoming a fan favorite, Cardona’s WWE run was marred by inconsistent booking, culminating in his release during the COVID-19 pandemic.
AEW’s open-door policy with independent promotions makes it an ideal landing spot for Cardona who has thrived in the indie wrestling scene. AEW stars has frequently appeared in promotions like GCW and ROH. Helping wrestlers like Cardona have the freedom to continue exploring their indie roots while competing on a larger stage.
Jericho’s recent attack on Cardona during a Game Changer Wrestling (GCW) event gave a hint that their storyline could extend beyond their upcoming clash at Final Battle 2024. While it’s unclear if Cardona will defeat Jericho to win the ROH World Championship, such a victory could signal a full-time deal with AEW. So, let us know in the comments on what do you think. Will AEW sign Matt Cardona
