The tournament kicked-off in Greater Noida.
The 7th Women’s National Boxing Championships in Greater Noida kicked off with impressive victories from the 2016 World Championships silver medallist Sonia Lather of Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) and Tamil Nadu’s S Kalaivani.
Sonia Lather began her bout aggressively against Mahi Lama of Madhya Pradesh in the 57kg opening round match, securing a comfortable 5-0 win.
In another match, Kalaivani, last edition’s silver medallist, proved too strong for Milano Mj of Kerala in the 48kg category. Her relentless attack led the referee to stop the contest in the third round, declaring Kalaivani the winner.
Kalaivani is now set to face Haryana’s Gitika in the next round, who secured a victory over Meraj Begum of Telangana by referee stopping the contest in round 1 (RSC).
Other boxers from Haryana, Rinku (52kg) and Tannu (57kg), also registered victories, progressing into the round of 16.
