She is the lone Indian to make it to the list.
Indian badminton sensation, PV Sindhu, has maintained her position among the world’s elite, securing the 16th spot in Forbes’ Highest-Paid Female Athletes List for the year 2023.
Sindhu, who has won two Olympic medals, continues to be one of the richest female athletes. According to Forbes, despite a disastrous 2023 season, her earnings from various deals contributed to her earning a total of USD 7.1 million. This remarkable feat makes her the sole Indian representative in the top 20 of the esteemed list.
The former world champion has faced adversity since stress fracture suffered during the Commonwealth Games 2022. After a five-month hiatus, she participated in the Malaysia Open 2023 but couldn’t progress to the further rounds. Furthermore, Sindhu suffered setbacks in the following tournaments which prompted her to part ways with coach Park Tae-Sang.
Notably, Sindhu has won no titles in 2023. However, her marketing acumen in India has played a pivotal role in her success. In the current year, Sindhu expanded her partnerships, joining forces with Centuary Mattress and the American Pistachio Growers.
PV Sindhu stands tall as the lone badminton player in the top 20 of Forbes’ highest-paid female athletes of 2023, a list traditionally dominated by tennis players. Iga Swiatek is the highest-paid female Athlete this year. Twelve of the world’s 20 highest-paid female athletes, and nine of the top 10, come from tennis, which offers good prize money and ample marketing opportunities for female athletes.
Golf and soccer each have two athletes represented in this year’s top 20, with badminton, basketball, gymnastics, and freestyle skiing rounding out the list with one athlete apiece.
