Nine-member Indian contingent will compete for Olympic quotas in the tournament.

The first World Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournament 2024, which begins in Busto Arsizio, Italy on Sunday, will be a crucial opportunity for the Indian boxers to secure their tickets to the Paris Olympics 2024. The nine-member Indian squad, led by two-time Olympian Shiva Thapa, will face tough competition from the best boxers in the world in the weight categories on offer.

India has already secured four Olympic quotas in the women’s event, thanks to the stellar performances of Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) at the Asian Games last year. They will be among the medal hopefuls for India at the Paris Olympics 2024.

The Indian men’s team will have to fight hard to earn their berths in the newly introduced weight classes of 51kg, 57kg, 63.5kg, 71kg, 80kg, 92kg, and +92kg. Shiva Thapa, who will compete in the 63.5kg division, is the most experienced boxer in the team, having participated in the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics. He will be up against Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Abdullaev, the reigning world champion in the division, in his opening bout.

He will be joined by Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal (92kg) and World Championship bronze medallists Mohammed Hussamuddin (57kg), Deepak Bhoria (51kg), and Nishant Dev (80kg). Lakshya Chahar (71kg) and Sanjeet Kumar (+92kg), who are the reigning national champions in their respective categories, complete the men’s line-up.

The women’s team will have only two boxers, Jaismine Lamboria (66kg) and Ankushita Boro (60kg), who will hope to emulate their previous achievements at the international level. Lamboria is a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, while Boro is a youth world champion.

The Indian boxers will be aiming to make the most of this opportunity and book their spots for the Paris Olympics 2024, where they will hope to end the country’s long wait for an Olympic gold medal in boxing.
