India has already bagged four Olympic quotas in boxing at the Asian Games last year.
The road to the Paris 2024 Olympics begins for the Indian boxers as they gear up for the first World Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournament 2024 in Busto Arsizio, Italy, starting on Sunday. The nine-member squad, led by two-time Olympian Shiva Thapa, will aim to secure their berths for the Games in the 13 weight categories on offer.
India has already bagged four Olympic quotas at the Asian Games last year, where Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) cut the women’s event.
The Indian men’s team will have a full strength of seven boxers, who will compete in the newly introduced weight classes of 51kg, 57kg, 63.5kg, 71kg, 80kg, 92kg, and +92kg. Shiva Thapa, who will fight in the 63.5kg division, is the most experienced boxer in the squad, having participated in the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics.
He will be joined by Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal (92kg) and World Championship bronze medallists Mohammed Hussamuddin (57kg), Deepak Bhoria (51kg), and Nishant Dev (80kg). Lakshya Chahar (71kg) and Sanjeet Kumar (+92kg), who are the reigning national champions in their respective categories, complete the men’s line-up.
The women’s team will have only two boxers, Jaismine Lamboria (66kg) and Ankushita Boro (60kg), who will hope to emulate their previous achievements at the international level.
The Busto Arsizio tournament will offer a total of 49 Olympic quotas, with 28 for men and 21 for women. The boxers who fail to qualify in Italy will have another chance at the second World Qualification Tournament, which will be held in Bangkok from May 26 to June 2.
Important Rule: As per the rules, countries can only enter boxers in the weight divisions where they have not qualified yet. Therefore, India will not have any representation in the following categories:
