Abhinash lost to Lasha Guruli of Georgia (1-4) in the quarterfinals of the World Championships

Abhinash Jamwal, the Indian boxer who competes in the men’s 65 kg category, had a heartbreaking experience at the recent World Championships.

Although he fell short of a medal, his fighting spirit and amazing performance earned praise from the commentator, who said the youngster is one to look out for.

After the World Championships, Abhinash has decided to reshape his training approach and adjust his strategy ahead of the World Boxing Cup Finals 2025, which will take place in Greater Noida, India, from November 14 to 21.

Abhinash had won two silver medals at the Boxing World Cup Stage 1 and Stage 2. He lost both times to the Brazilian boxer Yuri Falcao in the finals. However, in the boxing world cup final, Abhinash is determined to win gold for his country in front of the home crowd.

Lessons from the World Championships

“The World Championships were a great learning experience,” says Abhinash. “There were some situations where we went wrong, but we have discussed a lot about them with my coach.

The biggest lesson that I learned was that I need to dominate right from the very first round. That was my biggest mistake, not taking control early.”

His coaches have planned special training sessions since then, focusing on intensity and aggression from the bell. Every training session, sparing rounds are solely focused on the strategy to dominate from the first round and not let the opponent settle

“We are preparing to dominate from the first round,” he said.

Abhinash’s quarterfinal bout

At the Worlds, Abhinash Jamwal was up against an experienced campaigner in the quarterfinals, Olympic and World’s bronze medalist Lasha Guruli of Georgia.

He had analysed his opponents fights at the Olympics and the World Championship, looking for patterns, his strengths, and his weaknesses. After analysing his game, the idea was to go with his natural counterattacking game.

However, the plan didn’t work, as “In the first round, the scoring didn’t come as we expected,” he recalls. “So, I had to leave my game and play his. That worked a bit in the second round, and then I completely dominated the third, but by then, it was too late.

“Even though my counter game is strong, I need to be dominant from the start,” Abhinash explains. “Once the judges see that aggression from the first round, it sets a good impression on them. That’s what I’m working on now.

The new training program

Determined to correct his earlier mistakes, Abhinash Jamwal has revamped his training program. He has increased his punch volume, improved his counters, and completely changed his boxing strategy.

Every technical aspect of training now focuses on balance, control, and handling pressure. “Whether it’s bag work, shadow boxing, or sparring with my friends (teammates) at the camp, I’m trying to dominate from the first second,” he says.

Stamina plays a crucial role in this type of approach, and therefore, it’s essential for the boxers to increase their stamina and not to gas out early.

While many believe Indian boxers tend to fade in later rounds, Abhinash feels that it’s more due to tactics “It’s not that we get tired,” he explains.

“It’s the mindset; when you win the first two rounds, you just have to survive. I am planning to dominate the first two rounds completely, then, in the third, I will play my natural counter game.

World Cup Finals

The upcoming World Boxing Cup Finals are an important tournament for his career, as the prestigious event is being conducted on Indian soil.

The tournament will take place in Greater Noida’s Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex from November 14 to 21, bringing together over 140 elite boxers from 18 nations, including three Olympic medalists.

A strong 20-member squad will represent India at the event, led by seasoned pugilists as well as medalists from previous World Boxing competitions.

Future Plans

“I will give my best in the World Cup. After the World Cup, I will focus on the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. The ranking points from the World Cup finals will help me qualify and prepare for these events,” he added. “My ultimate goal is to win gold for India and make my country proud.”
