Angela Carini reportedly later said that she had suffered a broken nose as a result of the punch.
Unprecedented scenes occurred at the North Paris Arena as Italian Boxer Angela Carini quit her boxing bout just 46 seconds after the commencement of the match. Angela took on Algeria’s Imene Khelif in the round of 16 contest in the women’s 66kg category. Both were in their opening strides for the first few seconds with the Algerian making the first moves.
She delivered a few shots before a heavy punch in the face of the Italian. The blow seemed to have an effect on Carini who went to her corner and raised her hand to stop the bout. It surprised many and she informed the officials that she couldn’t bear the pain in the nose and decided to quit and award the game to her opponent.
Carini was in tears that she couldn’t compete in the match. The Italian came to the Olympics to honor her father. Despite rating herself as a warrior, she decided to keep her health in front and decided to discontinue the bout as the punch she took was something she claimed she had never felt before in her experienced career.
The incident drew huge attention with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni calling for regulations of female athletes.
The talk of regulations has arrived considering the fact that the Algerian Boxer was disqualified from the World Championships last year after she failed a gender test. The International Boxing Association banned her after she failed to meet the eligible criteria to take part in women’s competition during the gender test. It was not a testosterone examination but a specific test the details of which remain confidential.

Surprisingly she was cleared to participate at Paris by the International Olympic Committee as IBA has been barred in the last two Olympics due to years of issues with financial transparency, governance, and several alleged cases of corruption in the selection and officiating of events.
