India’s boxing quest comes to a close with Lovlina’s defeat at Paris Olympics 2024.

India has historically always tasted success in boxing, but this year, an incredibly tough draw changed the narrative. Lovlina Borgohain was a win away from securing a medal at Paris Olympics 2024 in women’s 75kg, but China’s Li Qian stood in her way. Borgohain was looking to be the first Indian boxer to win multiple Olympic medals and the first boxing medal for the nation at Paris Olympics 2024.

Lovlina stepped into the boxing ring bearing the hopes and expectations of over a billion Indian fans. She faced World Number 1, Li Qian. The first round of the quarter-final bout witnessed both boxers unable to land clear blows on the other.

However, the Chinese landed two strong punches and Lovlina came up with a good response too. It appeared to be a tight first round, with both players displaying supreme defence. However, it appeared as though the Chinese was marginally ahead.

The scores suggested the same as she led 3-2 after the initial round. The second round began with an initial burst from Lovlina and the Chinese looked slightly ragged. However, the No. 1 ranked boxer made up for the slow start by landing several strong punches, but the Indian was certainly upto the task.

It was an extremely tight contest with Borgohain once again trailing 2-3 at the end of the second round, again an interesting verdict which will be questioned later on.

In the third and final round, the Indian laid some excellent backhand punches, but the Chinese displayed a perfect combination of defence and forehand punches. There was not much to distinguish between the two players as the duo awaited the final verdict. “By split decision, in the red –  Li Quan” read the final announcement resulting in another heartbreak for India in boxing.
