Krisha Verma crowned first-ever U19 boxing world champion from India

Indian boxers led by Krisha Verma have been performing well in U19 World Boxing Championships.
India’s Krisha Verma clinched a gold medal yesterday at the U19 World Boxing Championships in Colorado, USA. However, five other Indian boxers in contention for the gold medals went down in their respective final.
Krisha defeated Lerika Simon of Germany 5-0 to win the gold medal. Chanchal Chaudhary, meanwhile, went down to Ruby White of England in the female 48kg category final as the Indian boxer was disqualified, forcing her to settle for the silver medal.
In the female 57kg category, Anjali Singh, who put up impressive shows through the tournament, succumbed to a 0-5 defeat to Mia-Tiah Ayton of England in the final. Rahul Kundu, competing in the male 75kg category, also settled for a silver medal as he lost to the USA’s Joseph Awinongya 1-4 in the final of his category.
In the female 60kg category, Vini put up a solid fight but was edged out by Ella Lonsdale 3-2. Also losing in the final was Akansha Phalaswal in the female 70kg category. Akansha lost to Lilly Deacon of England 4-1 and as a result of this defeat settled for the silver medal.

India will be adding more medals to their tally as five more female boxers, including Nisha (51 Kg), Supriya Devi Thokchom (54 Kg), and Parthavi Grewal (65 Kg), will be in contention for the gold medals. In the men’s section, Hemant Sangwan (90 Kg) will compete for the gold medal as he takes on the US boxer Rishon Sims in the final.
The U19 World Boxing Championships marks the inaugural global event for World Boxing, a newly established organization created to secure the future of boxing within the Olympic framework. Its goal is to take over the role of the International Boxing Association (IBA) as the premier governing body for the sport of boxing. World Boxing has over 29 member National Federations.
The U19 World Boxing Championships is held across 10 weight categories for both men and women. India has sent 19 boxers to the event as Amanpreet Kaur is the head coach for the team. There are 28 nations competing in the event and one representative from the boxing refugee team.
