What is AI companion Ani?

This is a new feature in Grok, which includes 3D animated characters like Ani, an anime-style female character and Rudy, a raccoon with mood variations like “Bad Rudy.”

These characters are part of Grok’s app voice mode and are currently available on iOS on Grok 3 and Grok 4 in the July 2025 update for subscribers.

This new companion, Ani, has garnered the attention of every user on the X platform pretty quickly with her attractiveness and boldness.

Her design is pretty similar to Misa Amane from Death Note. Elon Musk is a huge Anime fan with Death Note, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Your Name some of his favourite ones.

It wasn’t a total surprise that he might have taken some inspiration from there for the design of the Ani Ai anime model.

How to enable the AI companion?

• The user needs to first open the Grok app or X platform and ensure that they are using Grok 3 or Grok 4.
• Now, enable the companions feature in Settings (Two bars in the upper left, then the gear icon).
• Now, the user can select a companion like Ani and Rudy from the side menu to interact via voice or text in a dedicated UI where the character moves and reacts.

What can an AI companion do?

This AI companion can engage based on text and voice chat with the users. This can provide answers based on user queries, leveraging Grok’s abilities with the AI companion personality.

They can also use Grok’s memory to recall the prior conversation for continuity, unless the users have disabled it via Data controls.
