The free-kick goal was probably the best I have scored for my country- Marco Reus

The winger scored two of the eight goals for Die Mannschaft against Estonia.

Tuesday evening was one to remember for the German national team, who thrashed Estonia 8-0 in Mainz. Led by interim coach Marcus Sorg on the touchline and inspired by Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus on the pitch, the Nationalmannschaft won for the third time in as many matches in their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

The 30-year-old kicked off the scoring when he slotted home PSG man Thilo Kehrer's pass from close range after 09 minutes. But Reus' best moment came in the 37th minute − with Germany 4-0 up, following additional goals from Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka and Ilkay Gündogan − when he stepped up to take a free-kick, curling the ball beautifully over the Estonian wall, past the goalkeeper and into the net from almost 25 metres out.

It was Reus' 11th goal in 40 international appearances and the third time he has scored a brace for his country. Interestingly, it was the first time the German national team have scored from a direct free-kick since 2007 (when Torsten Frings put them 3-1 ahead against Switzerland) and the first time Germany have scored five goals in one half since the legendary 7-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup.

Reus was applauded off by the Mainz crowd on the 65-minute mark, with Bild Zeitung declaring: "Top marks for the football god". The man of the match himself, who had already scored against Belarus on Saturday, said: "I'm very happy. We wanted to score more goals than we did against Belarus, and we implemented that well. The free-kick goal was probably the best I have scored for my country," he added.

Nico Schulz, who has joined Borussia Dortmund ahead of the new season, also made the starting XI against Estonia. The left-back played the first half but was then substituted. Fellow new signing Julian Brandt did not feature, however.
