Asian Games 2023: Indian Football Teams' fixtures
India won Gold in the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games.
Both the Indian men’s and women’s football teams are gearing up for the prestigious 19th Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China. The announcement comes as a welcome opportunity for India’s football talent to showcase their prowess on the continental stage. Despite challenges, both teams are poised to make their mark and bring glory to the nation.
Asian Games Journey and Expectation
The Indian men’s football team, currently ranked 18th in Asia, have had a history of mixed fortunes in the continental games. While they clinched gold medals in the 1951 New Delhi and 1962 Jakarta Asian Games, as well as a bronze in Bangkok 1970, their performance in subsequent editions faced setbacks. Recent successes, including victories in the SAFF Championship and Intercontinental Cup, add optimism as they look forward to their 16th appearance at the Asian Games.
Similarly, the Indian women’s team, positioned 11th among AFC nations, have seen a steady rise. Participating in only two prior editions (Bangkok 1998 and Incheon 2014), they aim to improve upon their eighth and ninth-place finishes, respectively. The women’s football debut in the Asian Games in 1990 marked a significant step for the sport’s growth in the region.
A Glimpse of the Fixtures
The Indian men’s and women’s football teams are set to embark on their journey in the 19th Asian Games with an array of challenging fixtures. The men’s team is scheduled to clash with formidable opponents, including China and Bangladesh in Group A. Their journey begins with a faceoff against host nation China on September 19, followed by a match against Bangladesh on September 21.
For the women’s team, the competition commences with a match against Chinese Taipei on September 21. Further fixtures include an encounter with Thailand, on September 24.
