India are now ranked10th in Asia.

The Indian women’s football team is now ranked 60 in the world according to FIFA rankings. The side was 61 in the month of March 2023 and betters its rank by one position. The upward movement in the rankings released by FIFA is a by-product of the brilliant recent performances by the women footballers of the country on the international level.

It is worth noting that the highest ranking for the Indian women’s football team was 49 and their lowest was 63. The Blue Tigresses reached the 49th rank in 2013 and slipped down to 63 in 2019. It is not surprising to see India build on their recent climb in ranking. A narrow 3-2 defeat to Uzbekistan in a friendly was one of their decent performances in recent times.

Potential to rise further

The rise in the rankings is just a reward for the effort given by the Indian women footballers. Their recent win over Kyrgyz Republic in the Women’s Olympic Qualifier for Paris 2024 by a 4-0 scoreline suggests that the team has the potential to improve even further. Scoring four past a strong opponent and keeping a clean sheet at the same time was a show of sheer dominance by the Blue Tigresses.

Their upcoming matches against Japan and Vietnam are going to be extremely tough. Thomas Dennerby must prepare his players for the upcoming challenge against teams that are ranked 11th and 32nd respectively, in FIFA rankings for women’s national teams.

The second round of qualifiers will be extremely tough. However, the Indian fans will make an effort to motivate the women footballers in their quest to secure qualification for the football tournament at the summer Olympic games in Paris next year. The 60th rank makes India the 10th best Asian team in the world and gives them huge motivation to secure Olympic qualification for the first time in their history.
