Since the inaugural event, India has won 57 medals including 9 gold medals
A 13-member Indian boxing team, led by world champions Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain, is gearing up for the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, from September 23rd to October 8th. The boxing events commence on September 24 and run until October 5th, featuring medals in all 13 Olympic weight divisions -seven men’s and six women’s.
The quadrennial event holds particular importance as it serves as a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics, with the International Olympic Committee determining quotas on October 9th. Each weight category can secure only one quota per country.
Nikhat Zareen, a history-maker with multiple gold medals at the world boxing championships and a Commonwealth Games gold, will compete in the women’s 50kg. Lovlina Borgohain, a Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist and reigning world champion, joins in the middleweight category. Notable exclusions include Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora, both gold medalists at the world championships.
In the men’s division, Shiva Thapa leads the Indian squad in Amit Panghal’s absence. The team also includes world championships bronze medalists Deepak Bhoria and Nishant Dev, although Mohammad Hussamuddin is sidelined due to an injury. India aims to build on its past Asian Games success in boxing, having secured one gold and a bronze at the 2018 Jakarta Games.
Boxing has been an integral part of the Asian Games program since 1954, with India amassing 57 medals, including nine golds, over the years.
