The 19th edition of the Asian Games in 2023, originally scheduled for September 2022, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This quadrennial event is set to take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to 08 October, with some sports like football, volleyball, table tennis, and cricket commencing few days before the official start date. The quadrennial extravaganza will feature 481 events across 40 sports and 61 disciplines, with 45 countries sending delegations to compete for medals.
India is sending a strong contingent of 651 athletes, with Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Asian Games, world, and Olympic champion in men’s javelin throw, leading the way. Athletics will have the largest Indian squad, comprising 68 members, including 35 men and 33 women. Notably, the Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Harmanpreet Kaur, will be making their debut in Hangzhou.
The presence of Olympic medalists like weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, pugilist Lovlina Borgohain, and wrestler Bajrang Punia adds to India’s medal hopes. In badminton, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and PV Sindhu will compete, aiming to secure India’s maiden Asian Games gold medal in the sport. Defending champions Tajinderpal Singh Toor in shot put, Swapna Barman in heptathlon, and Jinson Johnson in the men’s 1500m will also vie to maintain their titles.
Furthermore, the 19th Asiad’s offers 74 Paris 2024 Olympic quotas across various sports, which is significant for athletes aiming to qualify for the next Olympic Games. Indian sports enthusiasts can catch all the live action through TV broadcasts and mobile apps via live streaming, with the coverage starting from September 19.
