Asian Games 2023: Updated final medal tally
China topped the medal tally with a record haul of medals.
The Asian Games 2023, hosted by the vibrant city of Hangzhou, China, was a celebration of the athletic abilities of the participants across multiple disciplines. The quadrennial event saw athletes gather from across the continent, with them aiming for glory, both individual, and for the nations they represent.
Let's take a closer look at the standout performances of some of the participating countries' sporting achievements that spectators got to witness.
The host nation, China, continued its dominating legacy and carried it over from the previous Asian Games held in 2018 at Jakarta. In Jakarta, China had amassed 289 medals in all. This year, they garnered nearly 100 medals more to end their tally at 383, including 201 gold, 111 silver and 71 bronze.
As was expected, Chinese athletes turned in consistent and outstanding performances across disciplines as diverse as athletics, swimming and boxing.,
Japan, placed second on the medals table, reaped handsome rewards. The Japanese contingent won 188 medals in all. They took home 52 gold, 67 silver, and 69 bronze. Japanese athletes put on display their match-winning abilities in cycling, judo, swimming, and wrestling. The above-mentioned categories contributed a significant portion of their 52-gold medal haul.
South Korea went toe to toe with Japan for second place on the medals table, only to finish third. South Korea finished third on the table with 190 medals, two more than Japan, but won 42 gold, which won 52. Hence their third-place finish.
The South Korean team’s strength lay in archery, fencing, swimming, judo and taekwondo, where their talent earned them a significant collection of medals to take home. The South Koreans also successfully defended their football win against Japan.
Team India made the nation proud, bagging 107 medals, comprising 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze. They leapfrogged four places from their eighth-place finish in the 2018 Asian Games, with 70 medals to their name. They put on display their talent in the disciplines of archery, athletics, shooting, badminton, and tennis. A total of eighteen medals came from shooting and athletics, forming a significant chunk of India’s medals tally.

The Central Asian country of Uzbekistan helped itself to 71 medals, mainly from boxing, judo, taekwondo, wrestling, and kurash. The last being a kind of wrestling practised in Central Asia and native to Uzbekistan. Buoyed by their natural flair for these sports, Uzbekistan finished the Asian Games with 22 gold, 18 silver, and 31 bronze.
The tiny country of Taiwan wound up their Asian Games campaign with 67 medals, the same as in 2018. This time around, they won 19 gold to 17 in the previous edition. They shone in the skating category, winning 13 of their 67 medals in that sport. The rest of their spoils mostly came from judo, taekwondo and tennis.
Iran's athletes made most of their flair for contact sports. This can be witnessed by the fact that almost half of their 54-medal haul came from contact sports. The Iranians secured ten in wrestling, eight in taekwondo, five in wushu, and finally five in kurash. For their none-too-shabby efforts, the Iranians bagged 13 gold, 21 silver, and 20 bronze.
