Athletics leads the charge as India approaches 40-medal mark
The second day of the Asian Para Games 2023 was incredibly eventful for India, with the nation securing nearly 20 medals. Following their impressive haul of 17 medals on the opening day, India's athletes maintained their momentum and approached the 40-medal mark. Athletics proved to be the sport that contributed the most medals, closely followed by shooting and canoeing.
In the KL2 canoe event, Prachi Yadav continued her outstanding performance by winning her second medal of the competition. After securing a silver medal on the previous day, Prachi elevated her performance to win the gold. Manish Kaurav, another canoeist, also claimed a medal in the sport.
The athletics contingent was the primary contributor to India's medal tally. Deepti Jeevanji initiated the day's proceedings by setting a new Area and game record in the women's T20 400m event. Later in the day, Sharath Shankarappa triumphed in a close battle in the men's T13 5000m race. This race featured only two participants, and the Indian athlete surged ahead at the last moment to secure the top position.
Towards the end of the day, Neeraj Yadav, Yogesh Kathuniya, and Muthuraja achieved a historic feat by sweeping all the medals in the men's F54/55/56 discus throw event. Neeraj Yadav not only won the gold but also established a new Area and Games Record. Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Yogesh Kathuniya claimed the silver medal, while Muthuraja brought home the bronze.
In the field of shooting, Rudransh earned his second medal in the competition. After winning silver in the mixed 50m Rifle SH1 event the previous day, he once again secured silver, this time in the 10m AP SH1 event. Manish Narwal, a medalist at the World Para Shooting Championship, clinched the bronze in the same event, with a Chinese shooter taking the top spot. Unfortunately, Akash, the third Indian shooter in the final, was eliminated at the beginning of the competition.
In powerlifting, Ashok Malik added to India's medal count by winning a bronze medal in the men's 65 kg category, achieving a best lift of 192kg. In addition to the medalists, several other athletes confirmed their spots in the semifinals. Nearly four archers progressed to the semifinals, and a few badminton players also advanced. Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Bhavina Patel secured a medal after a comfortable victory in the quarterfinals.
