Asian Para Games 2023 Day 4: India surpass previous edition’s tally, achieve historic best-ever medal haul
The nation won 17 more medals on Wednesday to take tally past 80-medal mark.
The Indian contingent added 17 medals to their tally at the end of day 4 of Asian Para Games 2023. With this, India leapfrogged to their best-ever medal haul in the history of Asian Para Games by breaching the 72-medal mark achieved in the previous edition in 2018. The onus will now be to break the century barrier and with two more days remaining, it looks an easy task from the onset.
Narayan Thakur started the day on a bright note for India by winning bronze in men’s T35 200m. Shreyansh Trivedi followed it up with yet another bronze medal but this time in men’s T37 100m dash. Post two bronze medal run, Sachin Khilari clinched India’s first gold for the day and 16th overall in men’s F46 shot put with this compatriot Rohit Kumar winning bronze in the same event.
This medal helped India surpass the 15-gold medal mark achieved in the previous edition. The badminton contingent from the other end were winning medals one after another. A total of six bronze medals were won in badminton alone today with close to two all-India finals lined up for tomorrow.
The shooting contingent won one gold medal through Sidhartha Babu in Mixed 50m Rifle P SH1. He went on to create new Games Record and also earned the country a Paris Paralympics quota in the event. Tokyo Paralympic gold medalist Avani Lekhara finished eighth and did not have a good outing.
World Paralympic medalist Sheetal Devi and experienced Rakesh Kumar combined to win first gold medal in archery. The duo shot to the top spot in mixed open compound archery by defeating home favourites China. Earlier in the day, Naveen and Adil defeated Kazakhstan to clinch bronze in men doubles W1 archery.
