Asian Para Games 2023: Indian para athletes achieve record medal haul in Hangzhou

For the first time in competition history, India will return from the Para Asiad with 100+ medals in its kitty.

The Indian contingent finished the fourth edition of Asian Para Games 2023 on a bright note by eclipsing the 100-medal mark. A total of 12 medals was won on the final day of the quadrennial extravaganza and India accounted for "a Nelson" - 111 medals. For the first time in the history of Para Asian Games, India has touched the three-figure mark.

Several world records were rewritten in the course of past six days. One among them was from the world champion Sumit Antil, who speared the javelin to 73.29m to break his own world record in men's javelin throw F64. Sundar Singh Gurjar a few days later registered 68.60m in F46 javelin throw to surpass the previous world record held by Sri Lanka's Dinesh Priyantha at 67.79m.

Athletics contributed 55 medals to India's medal tally followed by badminton with 21. Also, India para athletes won the most number of medals in badminton with China falling a number short. However, the hosts won more number gold medals to finish on top. Other sports that lived up to expectation was archery. Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi won three medals each to finish their campaign on a high.

Dilip Gavit and Neeraj Yadav continued their prime form and won gold medals respectively in men's 400m T47 and men's Javelin throw F-55. The latter went onto break his own Games record by registering 33.68m. His compatriot Lek Chand settled for bronze while Manihas finished a credible fifth. Towards the final session for the day, Pooja won her second medal in women's T-20 1500m.

The rowing contingent secured their maiden medal of the competition clinching silver in PR3 Mixed Double Sculls. The duo of Anita and Narayan combined to finish second behind hosts China. The pair started well and were leading at the 500m mark but China came back to reduce deficit and clinched gold.

Darpan Inani won the first gold medal in chess men's Individual Rapid VI-B1. India further went onto clean sweep in the event with Soundarya Kumar and Ashvinbhai settling for silver and bronze medals. In the team event, the trioka combined to win gold.
