India crossed the landmark century-medal mark on the final day of the showpiece event.

India's journey at the Asian Para Games 2023 came to a fitting closure with the nation notching up 111 medals - the highest number of medals won by the country in the Para Games history. With a record 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze medals, India finished fifth in the medals tally. Hosts China topped the medals chart by winning a whopping 521 medals; way above the rest.

In the previous edition, the Indian contingent won 72 medals and the target this time was to breach the three-figure mark. The para-athletes have shown tremendous improvements in the past five years. At the Tokyo Paralympics, India won 19 medals, taking everyone by surprise back in the country. This was the point where people started focusing on para-athletes.

Number of medals presented to Indian athletes on 28th October

A total of 12 medals were secured on the final day of the multi-sporting competition. Unlike other days, it was time for Chess to contribute to the medals tally on day 6. Close to half the medals won today was from the chess contingent. The sport of rowing won its first medal of the meet followed by a few medals from athletics.

The final day of the Asian Para Games 2023 witnessed India creating history by winning its 100th medal. By clocking 49.48 seconds, Dilip Gavit won gold medal in men's T-47 400m to help India reach the century landmark. Furthermore, Neeraj Yadav added one more gold medal to the tally in men's F-55 javelin throw. Apart from clinching gold, the 39-year-old, broke his own Games Record. His compatriot, Tek Chand settled for bronze.

Hosts China continued to win multiple medals and comfortably crossed the 520-medal mark. After winning 12 medals, India finished in the fifth spot. Indonesia and India had equal number of gold medals, but the former finished a spot below as they had won one less silver medal than India.

A close battle was on the cards for the fourth spot as well, but South Korea with more gold medals in its kitty leapfrogged India and overall collected 103 medals. West Asian country, Iran, did not receive much fight for the second spot as they finished their campaign by securing 131 medals (44 gold, 46 silver and 41 bronze).

Throughout the course of last six days, Iran held their second spot with the next few countries alongside India battling out for a top five finish in the medals tally.

What's next for Indian para athletes

With the closure of Asian Para Games 2023, the athletes will head home with pride. The expectations from here on will be high on the para athletes and with the Paralympics slated for next year, another record breaking performance is awaited.

Looking back at the last week's actions, athletics contributed 55 medals to the medals tally followed by badminton with 21. Sumit Antil and Sundar Gurjar Singh were the standout performers who broke world records in their respective javelin categories. Apart from them, Raman Sharma's grit and determination stood apart in the men's 1500m.

Although India won most number of medals in badminton, they could only finish in the third spot. China secured 20 medals but had most number of gold medals. India won 13 bronze medals overall and a poor conversion rate in the semifinals hurt them. However, by winning 21 medals, the Indian para badminton has developed multi folds.

The sport of Archery had the likes of armless archer Sheetal Devi who rose upto the ocassion to clinch three medals. Alongside her experienced Rakesh Kumar too notched up three medals. Both rowing and swimming won a medal each in the final two days of the competition.
