Asian Games will run from September 19 to October 4 2026.

Cricket is set to return to the Asian Games 2026, with the men’s competition scheduled to be played in the T20 format during the Aichi-Nagoya Games in Japan. The tournament will feature some of Asia’s leading cricketing nations as they compete for the gold medal, with India entering the event as the defending champions after winning the title in Hangzhou in 2023.

As was the case in the earlier edition of the competition, all competing countries will not begin at the same stage. This tournament structure gives benefits to the top-ranking Asian nations and allows them to bypass the first round and go straight into the elimination phase. The seedings were assigned according to the most recent ICC T20 rankings.

With the tournament draw now confirmed, the teams that have secured a direct passage into the quarter-finals have also been finalised, giving them a significant advantage over the remaining nations that will have to navigate the preliminary round.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have all earned direct qualification to the quarter-finals of the men’s cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games. The five teams received automatic entry into the knockout stage by virtue of being the highest-ranked Asian sides in the ICC Men’s T20I rankings.

Other teams that were originally participating will commence their journey through the preliminaries, with the winners progressing to complete the last quarter-final spots. This is why the seeded teams will play fewer matches to reach the medal stages.

The direct qualification of these five nations also highlights the consistency they have displayed over the course of time in the T20I format. The four countries, namely India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, have been perennially active in ICC tournaments and have been amongst the top cricketing nations in Asia.

India will play to defend the gold medal that they won during the Asian Games held in Hangzhou. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will look to utilise their guaranteed position in the quarterfinals.

The format means that the top teams will be kept apart in the draw for the tournament, and this should lead to various exciting matches upon which the quest for the Asian Games men’s cricket championship will commence.

Where will the 2026 Asian Games cricket competition be held?
