India won seven medals on Sunday to take its total medal count to 37 at the Asian Games 2026. Sadly, none of those seven came in gold, which has been quite elusive for the Indian contingent in Japan.
After eight days of action, India has only managed to win four gold medals, of which only one is from a non-cricket, non-kabaddi sport.
As they head into Day 9, India will not just look to add to their medal tally but hope to clinch gold medals.

Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker will hope to put behind her the disappointment of 10m air pistol when she returns to the shooting range for the women’s 25m pistol qualification and team final alongside Esha Singh and Rahi Sarnobat.
Medal events in athletics continue, with Murali Sreeshankar eyeing gold in the men’s long jump final. Sreeshankar, who won silver in Hangzhou 2022, will hope to better the colour of his medal in Aichi-Nagoya. Also in action will be David Solomon, a late addition to India’s contingent, in the same event.
Defending champion Avinash Sable will aim to defend his gold in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, as will Parul Chaudhary, who will be in action in women’s 5000m. Parul won bronze in the women’s 3000m Steeplechase event, a drop from her silver in the same event in 2022. She’ll hope to defend her gold in the women’s 5000m event, where she will be joined by Seema.
In the absence of defending champion Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh will carry India’s flag in the men’s javelin throw final. Chopra, a two-time reigning gold medallist pulled out of Asian Games due to injury.
Yash Vir will aim to replicate his bronze-winning performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games while Rohit Yadav holds the record of being India’s all-time second-best thrower.
When will India’s day start on Day 9 (September 28) of Asian Games 2026?
India’s day will start as early as 4 am, with surfing action followed by archery individual rounds at 4:45 am. The first medal event begins at 6:10 am—women’s 25 m pistol shooting.
