Alexandra Eala opted to compete at the Asian Games 2026 instead of the WTA China Open.
Philippines’ World No. 18 Alexandra Eala, who skipped the mandatory WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing to represent her country, headlined a high-stakes tennis event at the Asian Games 2026.
The event offered the men’s and women’s singles champions a direct quota for the LA Olympics 2028, provided they are inside the top-500 singles ranking at the June 12, 2028 cut-off. Tennis is one of seven sports at Aichi-Nagoya offering Olympic qualification.
The Olympic tennis programme features five events – men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles – with 64 players in each singles draw, and a maximum of four per country, of which 56 qualify directly via rankings and the rest come through continental champions like the Asian Games winner and other ITF places.
Her decision to skip the China Open cost her ranking points, a big pay cheque and a possible $10,000 WTA penalty. She had won bronze at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and was gunning for gold this time.

The early rounds went smoothly. Eala received a first-round bye, then beat Thailand’s Patcharin Cheapchandej 6-1, 6-0 and Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland 7-5, 6-0 in the quarter-finals.
However, in the semi-final she lost to China’s Wang Xiyu, who is ranked outside the top 80. Eala led 5-0 in the first set and took it 6-3. Wang then took control and won the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Eala retained the bronze medal she won at the previous Games, but was expected to reach the final, making her semi-final defeat a major upset.
Following her defeat, Eala missed out on the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 quota place, which went to Wang after her gold-medal triumph. Eala’s route to LA 2028 will now depend on the rankings, with the cut-off set at a top-56 WTA ranking on June 12, 2028.
Eala is currently ranked No. 18 in the world, well inside the 56-player direct qualification range. However, the ranking that determines Olympic qualification will be taken on June 12, 2028, so her current position does not guarantee a place.
At just 21, she has plenty of time to advance her career on the professional circuit. She will next return to action at the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open, which begins on October 12.
