Mirabai Chanu will aim to replicate her CWG 2026 prowess at the Asian Games 2026.

With just a few hours left until the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, athletes are putting the finishing touches on their preparations. One name that all Indian fans have their eyes on is weightlifting queen Mirabai Chanu.

Mirabai gave an impressive performance at the Glasgow CWG, where she won the nation’s first gold medal in the women’s 49kg category. She joined the select list of athletes who have won three consecutive gold medals across different editions of the Commonwealth Games.

However, at the Asian Games 2026, the Tokyo silver medalist will face challenges from North Korea, China, and the hosts, Japan. Chanu has the skill and courage to secure the top spot on the podium. However, injuries affected her form.

Mirabai Chanu entered the Asian Games 2022 as one of India’s top medal contenders; however, the four-time Commonwealth Games medalist missed a podium finish by the slimmest of margins. She finished fourth in Hangzhou in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event.

Mirabai lifted 83kg in a snatch, which was not up to her standards. She managed only one legal lift, failing to lift 86kg on her second and third attempts. A similar pattern followed after the interval; she successfully lifted 108kg in the clean and jerk round, but her other two attempts at 117kg were unsuccessful.

Her total of 191kg only earned her fourth place in the event. North Korea’s Ri Song-gum won gold with a dominant performance. She lifted a then-world-record total of 216kg.

Meanwhile, four-time world champion China’s Jiang Huihua secured the second position with 213kg. Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen finished third in the women’s 49kg category at the Asian Games 2022, lifting 199kg.
