Multiple Asian Games champions are part of the Indian athletics contingent

India is sending a 77-member athletics contingent to the Asian Games 2026, taking place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. The Indian squad includes 34 men and 43 women, including multiple Asian Games gold medallists across track, field and road events.

Gurindervir Singh, who clinched two medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026, will compete in sprint and mixed relay events. Two-time Olympian Avinash Sable will compete in the 3000m steeplechase. Hangzhou 2023 silver medallist Mohammed Afsal will hope to clinch gold in the 800m event.

Track specialist Parul Chaudhary will compete in four events, and middle-distance runner Pooja Olla will participate in the 800m and 1,500m. Other leading players include Asian Games silver medallists Prachi Choudhary and Jyothi Yarraji.

Priyanka Goswami, who became the first Indian woman to win a race walk medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, will take part in the women’s full marathon race walk, with Manju Rani joining her. Kartik Karkera and Sawan Barwal will participate in the men’s marathon.

Murali Sreeshankar, who won two silvers at the CWG 2026, will compete in the long jump. Fellow Glasgow Games silver medallist Sarvesh Kushare will compete in the high jump.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor, having won gold at the Hangzhou Games, will lead the medal charge in shot put. Former Asian Games gold medallist Annu Rani will compete in the women’s javelin throw.

India’s squad did have some big setbacks. Neeraj Chopra, India’s most successful athlete, had to withdraw from the javelin throw event due to injury and was replaced by Yashvir Singh. Long-distance runner Abhishek Pal was removed for doping violations.
