Indian athletes broke their medal record at the Hangzhou Games
India were among the 45 nations that took part in the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China, which were held from September 23 to October 8, 2023. 661 Indian athletes, comprising 333 men and 328 women, competed in medal events across 35 sports.
With 106 medals, India had their best-ever outing at the continental tournament. India’s medal haul included 28 golds, 38 silvers, and 40 bronzes. This meant that the country, which had taken part in every single Asian Games edition, breached the 100-medal mark for the first time.
There were several other records broken. Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won India’s first badminton gold, and the Indian shuttlers brought home their best-ever medal haul in the sport with three medals.
Shooting was another sport where the Indian athletes excelled, bringing in seven golds, nine silvers, and six bronzes. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar starred, winning two golds, a silver, and a bronze.
Jyothi Surekha and Ojas Deotale won three gold medals each, with the Indian archers bringing in a combined five golds, two silvers, and two bronzes. Athletics was another successful sport for India with six golds, 14 silvers, and nine bronzes.

Because of the wonderful performances by the Indian athletes, the country finished fourth in the final medal tally. This marked the country’s third-highest finish in the tournament, behind the 1951 New Delhi Games (second) and 1962 Jakarta Games (third).
Hosts China finished first with 383 medals, including 201 golds, 111 silvers, and 71 bronzes. Japan finished second with 188 medals, including 52 golds, 67 silvers, and 69 bronzes. South Korea finished third with 42 golds, 59 silvers, and 89 bronzes, for a total of 190 medals.
