BCCI had planned to send an Indian contingent led by captain Shreyas Iyer to Japan for the Asian Games.
India’s preparations for the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya have entered an interesting phase with the continental multi-sport event approaching. Cricket will be another major attraction in the multi-sport event, while the Indian men’s contingent will enter as the defending champions after winning the gold at the 2022 Hangzhou Games.
The BCCI had selected a 15-member squad for the Asian Games, which included captain Shreyas Iyer, veteran Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma and young teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. However, some recent reports have suggested a change in plans.
India’s preparations had recently been overshadowed by concerns regarding the arrangements and facilities provided to the players in Japan. Several full member nations raised the issue in front of the Asian Cricket Council. The ACC had then asked representatives from all boards to assess the facilities before making their final decision.

Amid several concerns over the size of the rooms that would be used to accommodate the cricketers, a photograph showing the bed provided at the Asian Games facility in Japan has now gone viral on social media.
The image was shared by journalist Nitin K Srivastava, who described it as the bed likely to be provided to the cricketers in the Asian Games accommodation facility. The pictures have immediately attracted considerable attention and have fuelled the ongoing controversy further.
This image suggests that the earlier reports, which claimed that the rooms are too small to accommodate two cricketers, as their kit bags alone would not fit in these rooms, hold. One source cited by India Today revealed that opening a kit bag would leave very little room for a player to move.
While this might not be a concern for athletes who are part of an individual sport like badminton or team sports with lighter kits like football, this is a major area of concern for cricketers who carry bulky equipment specific to each player.
There were earlier reports that suggested the BCCI are considering sending a second-string squad if the facilities seem unsuitable, and now, looking at these conditions, this seems the most likely outcome. However, the final decision still depends on the assessment carried out by the participating boards and their representatives.
