Asian Games 2026: India's full wrestling contingent
Aman Sehrawat is among the strongest medal contenders for India
India are sending a 15-member wrestling contingent to the upcoming Asian Games 2026, which will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. The wrestlers were selected based on national trials conducted across 18 Olympic weight categories in freestyle, women’s freestyle, and Greco-Roman.
The country had originally planned to send 18 wrestlers, but three members—Mukul Dahiya (men’s freestyle 86 kg), Deepak (Greco-Roman 67 kg), and Deepanshu Ahlawat (Greco-Roman 130 kg)—were removed from the contingent after testing positive for banned substances.
Despite this setback, the Indian wrestlers will hope to leave their mark at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Paris 2024 Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat is one of the poster boys of this contingent, hoping to improve upon the bronze he won at Hangzhou 2023.
Deepak Punia, who bagged silver in the previous Asian Games, will compete in the freestyle 97 kg event. 23-year-old Sujeet Kalkal, who won gold at the Asian Wrestling Championships this year, is another rising star in the men’s freestyle squad.
Hangzhou 2023 bronze medallist Antim Panghal will lead the women’s team and will participate in the 53 kg event. Another strong medal contender is Asian Wrestling Championships gold medallist Manisha Bhanwala, who will compete in the women’s 57 kg event.
Sunil Kumar, who won bronze at the Hangzhou 2023 Games and is a former Asian champion, will lead the four-man Greco-Roman squad.
