Indian athletes won 28 golds at the 19th Asian Games
India sent a 661-member contingent to Hangzhou, China, for the Asian Games 2022, which took place from September 23 to October 8, 2023. The Indian team, appearing in their 19th consecutive edition of the continental tournament, had a wonderful outing in terms of its medal haul.
Indian athletes clinched a total of 106 medals, finishing fourth in the final medal table. This included a stunning 28 golds. This was, by some margin, India’s best performance at the Asian Games in terms of gold medals, exceeding the tally at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games (16 golds) and the 1951 New Delhi Games (15 golds).
Shooting was the most successful sport for India, bringing in seven gold medals. This was followed by six gold medals from athletics and five gold medals from archery. Squash, cricket, and kabaddi brought two golds each. Four other sports – badminton, tennis, equestrian, and field hockey – brought one gold.
Jyothi Surekha and Ojas Deotale starred with three golds each in compound archery events. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar won two golds, along with a silver and a bronze, in rifle shooting events. Harinder Pal Sandhu won two golds in squash. Abhay Singh and Dipika Pallikal also won squash gold medals.
Neeraj Chopra won the men’s javelin title. Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won India’s first badminton gold at the Asian Games. Anush Agarwalla won a gold and a bronze in equestrian events.
