Indian athletes created multiple new national records at the Asian Games 2026.
India finished sixth in the athletics medal tally at the Asian Games 2026 with 24 medals (1 gold, 9 silver and 14 bronze). Although India won fewer medals and golds than in the 2022 Games, the campaign has still been solid, with several athletes rising to the occasion, breaking national records and setting personal bests.

5. Tejaswin Shankar

Tejaswin Shankar has become synonymous with making history. After becoming the first Indian athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the decathlon, he has added another historic chapter to his career at the Asian Games 2026.
The 27-year-old, who is the first Indian to win medals in two different athletics events at the CWG, won a bronze medal in Aichi-Nagoya with 7934 points. Tejaswin Shankar is also the first Indian to win two decathlon medals at the Asian Games.
4. Yash Vir Singh

With Neeraj Chopra ruled out due to injury, India’s javelin hopes at the Asian Games 2026 rested on Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav. In Japan, Yash Vir, who also secured a bronze medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow earlier this year, emerged as India’s top javelin thrower.
He produced a personal best of 85.72m to clinch the silver medal at the continental event. Meanwhile, Rohit secured bronze in the men’s javelin throw, while Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga claimed the gold.
3. Ancy Sojan

Ancy Sojan won her second silver medal at the Asian Games with a 6.53-meter jump. Sojan lost a last-attempt battle for the gold medal to China’s Huang Yingying in the women’s long jump event.
The 25-year-old reclaimed the lead with 6.53m in her second attempt. However, Huang Yingying took a 6.55m leap on her final attempt to snatch the title from the Indian long jump star. However, Sojan has already made history and will continue to do so.
2. Gulveer Singh

Gulveer Singh is India’s big hope in long-distance running. Earlier this year, he became the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 5,000m and 10,000m events. At the Asian Games 2026, Gulveer won three medals, two silver and a bronze.
Gulveer Singh won silver in the men’s 10,000m with a time of 28:29.38. He added another silver in the 1,500m, clocking a personal best of 3:36.72. He won a bronze medal in the 5,000m with a time of 13:32.75.
1. Vithya Ramraj

Vithya Ramraj won three medals at the 2026 Games, completing a full set across all three colours. First, she teamed up with Kiran Pahal, Machettira Poovamma, and Prachi Choudhary to win gold in the women’s 4x400m relay, clocking 3:29.69.
Then, she joined Manu TS, Machettira Poovamma, and Vishal TK to win silver in the mixed 4x400m relay. Her final medal came in the women’s 400m hurdles, where she claimed bronze in 54.75 seconds and broke PT Usha’s 42-year-old national record.
