Asian Games 2026 and the West Indies ODIs will clash with each other.
India are set for a packed international schedule later this year, with the senior men’s team scheduled to take on the West Indies in a three-match ODI series at home. The series forms an important part of India’s preparations in the 50-over format and is expected to provide opportunities to several players ahead of ICC Cricket World Cup 2027..
However, the ODI series coincides with another major event on the cricket calendar. The men’s cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, will be held from September 24 to October 4, and it will overlap with India’s ODI series against the West Indies, scheduled from September 27 to October 3.
With the two tournaments taking place simultaneously, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will have to name separate squads. While the squad for Asian Games 2026 has been announced, the team for West Indies ODIs is yet to be named. This means that several regular members are expected to be unavailable for the ODI series due to their participation in the Asian Games.
Which Indian players will miss the West Indies ODI series?
A total of eight Indian players are set to miss the ODI series against the West Indies owing to their participation in the 2026 Asian Games. The players are Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.
It will be difficult for the selectors to find the right combination of players for the West Indies ODIs, which will require them to name a different roster from the one at the Asian Games, creating opportunities for others in domestic cricket as well as for those trying to break into the national team.
