India had sent a 661-member contingent to compete in 35 different disciplines.
India’s 19th Asian Games appearance concluded with the nation’s best-ever performance. India secured 106 medals, including 28 gold, 38 silver and 40 bronze, to finish fourth on the points table.
What made the tally even more remarkable was the wide range of sports that brought success. Unlike the Commonwealth Games, where India tend to lean heavily on a handful of favourite disciplines, this campaign saw medals arrive from 22 different sports, with archery, athletics and shooting leading the way.
On that note, let’s revisit India’s results across various disciplines from the previous edition.
Here’s how India performed at the Asian Games 2022
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
Athletics
Athletics was India’s most productive discipline, delivering 29 medals including six gold. Neeraj Chopra successfully defended his javelin throw title, finishing a historic one-two with training partner Kishore Jena, who claimed silver behind him.
Tejaswin Shankar and Avinash Sable both added to India’s growing reputation in the field and endurance events. Meanwhile, Parul Chaudhary won gold in the 5,000m and combined with a steeplechase medal.
Annu Rani struck gold in the women’s javelin, and India’s mixed 4x400m relay team also picked up a silver medal following Sri Lanka’s disqualification.

Archery
No discipline dominated like Archery‘s Compound section. India swept all five available gold medals in the category, an unprecedented feat at the Asian Games, thanks to Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Deotale, who each won three golds in their individual, mixed team and same-gender team events.
Abhishek Verma added a silver to the tally, while 17-year-old Aditi Swami picked up a bronze medal. India added two more medals in the Recurve category — a silver for the men’s team and a bronze for the women’s team.
Badminton
India claimed their first-ever Asian Games gold medal in badminton, courtesy of the men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who beat South Korea in the final.
HS Prannoy reached the men’s singles semi-finals to add a bronze, and the men’s team also picked up a silver along the way.
Boxing
Boxing‘s return was more modest than the golden haul India managed at the Commonwealth Games a year earlier. Lovlina Borgohain reached the women’s 75kg final to take silver, while Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar, and Narender Berwal all settled for bronze in their respective weight categories.
Cricket
Cricket featured at the Asian Games for the first time since 2014, and both Indian teams won gold. Under Harmanpreet Kaur’s captaincy, the women’s team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and won the gold medal by defeating Sri Lanka in the final.
The men’s team, fielding a second-string squad, was awarded gold due to higher seeding, after rain washed out their final versus Afghanistan.
Equestrian
Equestrian emerged as a surprise package for India, with Anush Agarwalla, Divyakirti Singh, Hriday Chheda and Sudipti Hajela clinching gold in team dressage, before Agarwalla added an individual dressage bronze.
Hockey
As expected, both the men’s and women’s hockey teams brought home medals. Harmanpreet Singh’s team thrashed defending champions Japan 5-1 in the final to secure a fourth Asian Games title. The women’s team fell to China in the semi-finals before recovering to beat Japan for the bronze.

Kabaddi
India’s men’s and women’s kabaddi teams both reclaimed the gold medals they had held for most of the sport’s Asian Games history. The women’s team edged past Chinese Taipei in a tense final, while the men’s side overcame Iran in a contest that had its share of on-field drama before India prevailed.
Shooting
Shooting produced India’s best-ever Asian Games haul, with 22 medals including 7 gold. Divyansh Panwar, Rudrankksh Patil and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar opened the account with gold in the men’s 10m air rifle team event. Meanwhile, Sift Kaur Samra set a world record on her way to individual gold in the 50m rifle three positions.
17-year-old Palak Gulia won the 10m air pistol gold with a record-breaking Asian Games score, while Aishwary Tomar and Esha Singh picked up four medals each. In total, India won seven golds, nine silvers and six bronzes.
Squash
Squash delivered two of India’s two gold medals in Hangzhou. The men’s team, spearheaded by Saurav Ghosal, beat Pakistan 2-1 in a gripping final. Also, Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Sandhu won the mixed doubles title in straight games against their Malaysian opponents.
Ghosal also picked up an individual silver, and the women’s team added a bronze to round off a strong campaign for the sport.
Table tennis
Table Tennis produced one of the more heartening Asian Games stories, as Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee won bronze, India’s maiden Asian Games medal in women’s doubles.
Tennis
India extended its streak of winning at least one tennis gold at every Asian Games since 2002, as Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale rallied from a set down to beat Chinese Taipei in the mixed doubles final. In addition, the men’s doubles pair of Saketh Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan won silver.
Weightlifting
Weightlifting was the rare discipline where India underperformed. Mirabai Chanu, competing not fully fit, finished fourth in the women’s 49kg category, while Bindyarani Devi placed fifth in the 55kg division. It extended India’s medal drought in the sport at the Asian Games back to the 1998 Bangkok edition.
Wrestling
Wrestling‘s medal count came without a gold this time, though there was no shortage of fight. Deepak Punia reached the men’s freestyle 86kg final for silver, and India picked up a string of bronze medals through Sunil Kumar in Greco-Roman, along with Antim Panghal, Sonam Malik, Kiran and Aman Sehrawat in the freestyle categories.
