Gautam Gambhir won’t be travelling to Japan with Indian contingent for Asian Games 2026.
After an enthralling Test series in Sri Lanka, the Indian Cricket Team’s focus will shift back towards T20I cricket. After the three-match series against Afghanistan, the Men in Blue will be travelling to Japan for the Asian Games 2026.
The cricket event in Asian Games 2026 will run from September 24 to October 3. India will be captained by Shreyas Iyer, who recently took over the captaincy of the T20I team. He would be keen to take his team to glory after a tough start to his captaincy career.
India have named a full-strength squad for the Asian Games 2026. However, they will be directly playing the qualifier on September 28. With the kind of squad that they have, they would be favourites to win the competition.
VVS Laxman to coach India during Asian Games 2026 – Reports

India, however, will not be accompanied by their regular coach for Asian Games 2026. Gautam Gambhir will be here in India as the ODI team will be taking on the West Indies in a three-match series at home during that phase.
It will be VVS Laxman, who will be coaching India in the Asian Games. As per reports in PTI, he will be assisted by Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Subhadeep Ghosh. Apart from that, Maroof Fajandar from Cric Ops will be designated “Team Leader” of Support Staff.
Laxman also served as head coach of India during the Zimbabwe series. Under him, India have enjoyed huge success, and there were also reports that BCCI is planning to give him a larger role in Indian Cricket.
He would be keen to carry on his good record as coach of the side and help India clinch a gold medal. Notably, the Men in Blue will enter the tournament as defending champions.
