India lost to Pakistan in straight sets.
Indian men’s volleyball team walked into Thursday’s Asian Games 2026 quarter-final with a spotless record. They had topped their group with three wins from three, including a comeback from two sets down against Qatar, and they were chasing a first men’s volleyball medal in 40 years.
Instead, they lost 0-3 to Pakistan (19-25, 23-25, 18-25) in one hour and 22 minutes. Pakistan moved into the semi-finals, and India‘s wait, which goes back to bronze at Seoul 1986, continues.
Let’s discuss why India couldn’t defeat their arch-rivals in the men’s volleyball semis.
3. Pakistan had an attacker India could not contain

In volleyball, the spike is the hard downward hit that usually wins a point. Pakistan’s Murad Khan scored 19 points, landing 18 of his 33 spikes, a success rate of about 55%. His teammate Usman Faryad Ali added 13.
India’s best scorer, Ashwal Rai, finished with 9. Jerome Vinith, Joel Benjamin Jebaraj and Chirag Yadav scored 8 points each. That is a decent spread, but no Indian player came close to Murad’s output.
Going into the match, Vinith had completed 69 spikes in the tournament, the most on either side, yet it was Murad who made the biggest impact on the day.
2. Pakistan turned far more of their attacks into points
Across the match, Pakistan landed 50 of 83 spikes, about 60%. India made 33 successful attempts out of 81 (approximately 41%). In the first set, the gap was wider: Pakistan landed 17 of 24 (71%) and India 11 of 29 (38%).
Both teams attacked about the same number of times, but Pakistan converted far more into points. That gap has shown up in the scoreline; even when sets were close in the middle, Pakistan pulled away at the end.
1. Pakistan were stronger in defence
At the other end of the court, Pakistan’s block success rate was 20% to India’s 10%, and their dig success rate was 39% to India’s 25%. A block is when a defender stops the ball at the net, and a dig is a save that stops the ball from hitting the floor.
India did show fight. They led the second set by as many as three points, but Pakistan levelled at 19-19 and won 25-23. India also gave away points through service errors and net touches, and Pakistan led 3-0 at the start of the third set. Pakistan made mistakes too, but they took better advantage of India’s.
What does it mean?
Indian men’s volleyball team finished without a medal. Pakistan had also beaten them 3-1 at Jakarta 2018 and 3-0 at Hangzhou 2022, so this was another loss in a rivalry that has recently gone Pakistan’s way.
Why did India lose to Pakistan in the men’s volleyball quarter-final at the Asian Games 2026?
Pakistan won 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) mainly because they were more accurate in attack. They landed 50 of 83 spikes (about 60%) against India’s 33 of 81 (about 41%), and Murad Khan scored 19 points on 18 of his 33 spikes. Pakistan also had better block and dig success rates, at 20% against 10% and 39% against 25%.
When did India last win an Asian Games men’s volleyball medal?
At Seoul 1986, where they won bronze. India have three Asian Games men’s volleyball medals in total: bronze at Tokyo 1958, silver at Jakarta 1962 and bronze at Seoul 1986. This defeat means the wait for a fourth has reached 40 years.
