Asian Games 2026: India's updated schedule for September 19

Asian Games officially kicks off on September 19

Saturday, September 19, is the day the Asian Games 2026 will formally be declared open in Aichi-Nagoya. Several sports, including women’s cricket, soft tennis and teqball, started before the ceremony, so India already has athletes in medal contention before the parade of nations begins.

The morning belongs to Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza. The debutant topped her group in teqball, a sport making its first appearance at the Asian Games, with back-to-back wins, the second a 2-0 result over Cambodia’s Koemyean Dy.

She will now play Indonesia’s Sumaya in the women’s singles semi-final, and a win would take her into the final.

In the evening, the focus shifts to the opening ceremony at Paloma Mizuho Stadium. Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker and defending Asian Games shot put champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor will carry the Indian flag.

The ceremony’s theme is “Harmonic Heart Beat”, built around athletes from across Asia connecting through sport. Filmmaker Yukihiko Tsutsumi, known for the 20th Century Boys trilogy, leads the creative direction.
