India Women storm into Asian Games 2026 semi-final with dominant win over Japan
The Asian Games 2026 women’s cricket tournament has reached the knockout stage in Nisshin, with India continuing their title defence in Japan. The defending champions started their campaign in the quarterfinals on Friday and made a strong statement with a comfortable win.
India entered the Asian Games after a successful Women’s Asia Cup campaign. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team had won the title in Dubai last week, defeating Sri Lanka in the final. The team will now be hoping to carry that form into the Asian Games and add another gold medal to their record.
India Women’s first challenge in the knockout stage came against hosts Japan at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. India were expected to have the upper hand, but Japan also looked to make the most of their historic opportunity against one of the top teams in women’s cricket.

India produced a dominant performance against Japan in the quarterfinal on September 18. After winning the toss, India put Japan into bat and bowled them out for just 57 runs in 19.5 overs.
The Indian spin attack caused most of the problems for Japan. N. Shree Charani was the standout bowler as she finished with figures of 4/10 in four overs.
Shafali Verma also played an important role with both bat and ball. She picked up two wickets for 13 runs before smashing an unbeaten 40 off just 15 balls in the chase.
India reached 59/2 in only five overs to complete an eight-wicket victory and book their place in the last four.
With this victory, India qualified for the women’s cricket semifinal at the Asian Games 2026.

India will now face Bangladesh in the women’s cricket semifinal at the Asian Games 2026. Bangladesh have also made it through to the final four after their quarterfinal match. India will now meet Bangladesh in the semifinal on Sunday, September 20.
India will now have another important knockout match against Bangladesh as they continue their Asian Games 2026 gold medal journey.
