Vedaant Madhavan is walking into the Asian Games 2026 as one of the more closely watched names in the Indian contingent, and not just because of his last name.

Vedaant was born on August 21, 2005, in Mumbai, to actor R Madhavan and fashion designer Sarita Birje. He is 6 feet 3 inches tall (191 cm), a build that has helped him in freestyle swimming, his primary discipline.
Unlike most star kids who eventually gravitate toward acting, Vedaant chose a completely different path. “I don’t really like to have the title of R Madhavan’s son. I want to make my own name… my competitors respect me for who I am.” Vedaant said (via Olympics.com).

How did Vedaant Madhavan get into swimming?
Vedaant’s swimming journey started almost by accident. While studying at the Universal American School in Dubai, he was part of his school’s swim team, which included a few national-level swimmers. During one inter-school competition, his coach placed him in a relay alongside swimmers three years older than him. In his own words, recalling that moment:
“I was swimming with my school team. There were some national-level swimmers in that team. One day, we had a competition against other schools, and the coach decided to put me in that relay. And that moment, I realised I can keep up with them. They were three years older than me. I was keeping up with them, and I was having a lot of fun. After that, I started going competitively, ” he said.
He first learned swimming at Mumbai’s Goregaon Sports Club before moving to the Glenmark Aquatic Foundation in 2017, where his training became more structured. His current coach is Pradeep Sreedharan.
What is Vedaant Madhavan’s educational background?
He completed his schooling at the Universal American School in Dubai. He went on to major in marketing at Virginia Tech in the United States and has swum for the university’s team, the Virginia Tech Hokies, since 2023.

- 2023 Malaysia Invitational Age Group Championships: Five gold medals in the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle events, along with two personal bests.
- 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, Trinidad and Tobago: Finished 5th in the 1500m freestyle and was chosen as India’s flag bearer for the event.
- 2025 Senior National Aquatic Championships: Finished 6th in the 800m freestyle and won bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
- 2026 Senior National Aquatic Championships: Finished 4th in the 200m freestyle and 6th in the 400m freestyle, plus three relay bronze medals in the 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle and mixed 4x100m freestyle relays.

The Asian Games 2026 are being held in Japan from September 19 to October 4. Vedaant has been named in India’s swimming squad and will compete in three events: the 200m freestyle, the 200m backstroke and the 4x200m freestyle relay. This will be his first appearance at the Asian Games.
