Manu Bhaker’s wait for an individual medal at the Asian Games continued on Wednesday after she finished fifth in the women’s 10m air pistol final in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The 24-year-old shooter, a two-time Olympic bronze medallist at Paris 2024, finished with 181.1 points before being eliminated after the 18th shot.
Bhaker had actually qualified for the final in strong fashion, finishing third overall with a score of 579 out of 600 in the qualification round. She made a slow start in qualification with a series of 95s but recovered strongly, posting scores of 96, 96 and 98 to secure her place among the eight finalists.
Once the final got underway, Bhaker found herself in a tight contest with Cheng Yen-Ching of Chinese Taipei for the fourth and final medal-adjacent spot.
The gap between the two shooters remained around a point for much of the final, narrowing to just 0.8 points after both had completed 18 shots. That proved decisive, with Bhaker eliminated at that stage. Cheng went on to finish fourth with 200.7 points.
South Korea’s Choo Gaeun won gold with 246.3 points, setting a new Asian Games record. China’s Shen Yiyao took silver with 241.3 points, while her compatriot Jiang Ranxin claimed bronze with 221.6.
It was a disappointing day for the Indian pistol shooters as a whole. The women’s 10m air pistol team of Bhaker, Esha Singh and Suruchi Singh also missed a medal, finishing fourth with 1719 points, level with bronze medallists Vietnam but losing out purely on a lower count of inner ten shots. Esha finished 16th individually with 572 points in qualification, and Suruchi placed 26th with 568.

Bhaker will not have to wait long to try to put this result behind her. She is set to return to the range on September 27 for the women’s 25m pistol. She was part of India’s gold medal-winning team in this event at the previous Asian Games.
